Hoglund, Harris Shine as Baseball Blanks Auburn in SEC Opener

3/19/2021 | Baseball

Rebels Top Tigers, 1-0, Behind Hoglund's 13 Ks, Harris' Game-Winning Home Run

OXFORD, Miss. – Junior Gunnar Hoglund turned in a career day, while freshman Calvin Harris ensured that his pitcher would earn credit for his performance as No. 4 Ole Miss rallied for a 1-0 shutout victory over Auburn in the SEC opener. The Rebel ace was electric all night and worked 8.0 IP of shutout baseball with 13 strikeouts, but it could have been for naught save for Harris' pinch-hit, solo homer in the eighth inning that sealed the win for the Rebels.

Friday's SEC opener was a pitching duel at the league's highest standard between Hoglund and Auburn's Cody Greenhill. Each starter was able to work seven-plus innings of scoreless action, and neither team found much success against the opposing arm. Greenhill allowed just four hits in 7.0 IP, while Hoglund allowed five hits in 8.0 IP, with neither allowing a run to cross the board.

Hoglund, however, was able to outlast Greenhill by just one inning, and it ultimately paid off as Ole Miss was able to strike for its first and only run of the night against Auburn reliever Joseph Gonzalez. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Harris stepped up to pinch hit for John Rhys Plumlee and belted a two-strike fastball over the right field fence to ensure the Rebel victory.

Harris' timely home run, the first of his career at Ole Miss, capped a spectacular night for Hoglund that included a career-long 8.0 IP, 13 strikeouts (one off his career-best) and just one walk issued. The Rebel starter earned the victory to improve to 3-0 on the season, while Taylor Broadway earned the save, his second of the year, after working a 1-2-3 ninth inning in relief of Hoglund.

Hoglund's day began with two early runners on the base path after a pair of early singles in the first inning, but he was able to strand both with an inning-ending strikeout. Following the first, Hoglund would go on to retire 12 straight Tigers before the streak was snapped with an Auburn single in the fifth inning.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, was finding similar lack of success against Greenhill. Through four innings, the only two Rebels to reach were Kevin Graham on a first-inning single and Peyton Chatagnier on a walk, both of whom were promptly stranded on base. The Rebels' didn't even record their second hit of the game until the sixth inning, a single off the bat of Chatagnier who was eventually stranded on an inning-ending groundout.

Undoubtedly Hoglund's most impressive inning came in the seventh, after two Auburn batters reached to lead off the frame and a passed ball that quickly put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Hoglund was able to bounce back and strike out three consecutive batters to strand both runners where they stood at second and third. He capped the inning with his 13th strikeout on his 105th pitch.

Hoglund came back out for the eighth and worked another 1-2-3 inning that came to a conclusion after his 117th pitch of the night for a new career-high pitch count for Hoglund. Despite his early successes, it would come down to the Rebel closer to work the save opportunity due to Hoglund's high pitch count.

Before Hoglund's exit, however, Harris ensured that his starter would earn a decision, and a win at that, with his pinch-hit solo shot in the bottom half of the eighth. After two quick outs, Broadway came in for the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 frame, capped by a game-sealing strikeout to earn the save and the Ole Miss victory.

No. 4 Ole Miss will go for the series victory against Auburn tomorrow in Oxford, with a first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. CT at Swayze Field.
