Rebels Open Ole Miss Classic with Pair of Shutout Victories
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (10-7) got the job done both ways on Friday during the opening day of the Ole Miss Classic, defeating Samford (6-7) in a tight 3-0 pitcher's duel in the afternoon before returning to trounce the Bulldogs 8-0 in five innings in the night cap.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 3, Samford 0
Delivering a career performance in the circle, Savannah Diederich didn't need much help in the early game as Ole Miss downed the Bulldogs by a 3-0 score line.
The junior hurler had her stuff working early and carried the momentum throughout the game. Surrendering just three hits in seven strong, Diederich struck out a career high 11 batters in recording the first complete game shutout of her career.
After failing to capitalize on some chances in the first two innings, Ole Miss struck in the third. Following a Jessica Puk HBP and Paige Smith double, Sydney Gutierrez slashed a two-run single through the left side of the infield, bringing both runners home.
Ole Miss tacked on an insurance run late off of a Samford error and Diederich sealed the deal, locking up the final batter of the ball game for strike three.
GAME TWO | Ole Miss 8, Samford 0 (5)
Though not much offense was needed, plenty was provided in the second game of the twin billing as Ole Miss utilized a massive seven-run second frame to ease by the Bulldogs in five innings.
Ava Tillmann got the nod in the circle and kept Samford guessing all game long, allowing a single hit and one walk while striking out half of the 14 batters she faced in four full innings. Freshman Aynslie Furbush came on in relief for the last innings, striking out the side.
On offense, the Rebels received eight hits from eight different players, with eight different Rebels also scoring a run.
Ole Miss did the vast majority of its damage in the second frame, when the Rebels batted around en route to seven runs. Autumn Gillespie got things started with an RBI infield single, with three more runs coming in on a pair of throwing errors and a Blaise Biringer RBI knock. Furbush finished thing off with authority, tattooing a three-run moon shot over the left field fence.
Tate Whitley slapped an RBI single up the middle in the third to score Abbey Latham and with an eight run lead, pitching and defense finished things off to bring the run rule into effect.
