MSU G1 Final

No. 6 Baseball Drops Game 1 to No. 3 Mississippi State

4/16/2021 | Baseball

Hoglund’s Strong Start Not Enough as Rebels Fall, 5-2

STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 6 Ole Miss baseball and No. 3 Mississippi State put on a show worthy of an elite Southeastern Conference matchup, but the Bulldogs scored late to claim Game 1 of the series with a 5-2 victory.

Gunnar Hoglund turned in a terrific outing, going 7.0 innings with three runs allowed on four hits and no walks, striking out nine. However, the MSU combo of Christian MacLeod, Preston Johnson and Landon Sims was just a bit better in the tightly contested battle as the trio combined to allow two runs on six hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts.

Hayden Dunhurst led Ole Miss at the plate, going 2-for-4, the only Rebel with multiple hits on the evening. TJ McCants notched the team's only RBI on a solo home run, but the collective offensive effort wasn't enough against the stingy Bulldog arms.

Mississippi State struck first in the opening frame following a one-out double by Tanner Allen. The Bulldog right fielder came home for the game's first run on a Kamren James base hit. Hoglund struck out two in the inning to limit the damage.

Ole Miss got that run back with a two-out rally in the third. Cael Baker started it with the Rebels' first hit of the day, a base knock to left. Jacob Gonzalez earned his way on with a walk, setting Peyton Chatagnier up for a single through the left side that glanced off the MSU shortstop's glove to bring Baker home.

Hoglund carried that momentum into the bottom half, striking out Scotty Dubrule, Rowdey Jordan and Allen for a one-two-three frame.

In the fourth, TJ McCants gave Ole Miss the lead, launching a solo home run onto the plaza in right field, but MSU got that run right back in the bottom half on a James home run to tie it at two.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the sixth after a one-out triple by Allen, who later came home on a James sacrifice fly.

After Hoglund's exit, Derek Diamond took over on the hill to start the eighth for Ole Miss, making his first career relief appearance. In one inning for the sophomore right-hander, the Bulldogs notched two runs on three hits and an error to extend their lead to 5-2.

In the ninth, Hayden Dunhurst opened the inning with a leadoff double, looking to spark a late rally. However, he was caught in no-man's land and doubled off on a Bench line drive, ending all hope of a late comeback.

The two in-state rivals will meet for Game 2 of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
