Seniors Nominated for Prestigious Postgraduate Scholarship
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Rebel seniors Abby Buesseler from Ole Miss Rifle and Tyler Myers of Ole Miss Baseball have been nominated for the SEC Boyd H. McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship by the University of Mississippi, the SEC announced Wednesday.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.
This year, the SEC will provide the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 postgraduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship.
The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and will be announced in May. Each would become the sixth Rebel to win the award, and the first since Rebel golfer Forrest Gamble won in 2016.
In the classroom, Buesseler, a biochemistry major, has had a tremendous amount of success. A senior at Ole Miss, she is a four-time member of the Chancellor's Honor Roll, four-time GARC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and four-time CRCA Scholastic All-American. For her academic excellence, Buesseler has also found her name on the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll and the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll each year that she's been on campus. Beyond academics, the Stacy, Minnesota, native is very active in the Oxford community. She's been a member of the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) since 2018 and has participated in community service efforts with Hope to Dream, Adopt a Basket, A Night to Shine, Mac Brown's Awesome Lemonade Stand and Reading with the Rebels. Buesseler also serves as secretary for the Ole Miss chapter of the Mortar Board, a national honor society recognizing college students for their exemplary scholarship, leadership and service.
Buesseler has helped turn around the Ole Miss rifle program. During her first three seasons in Oxford, she earned four All-GARC honors, qualified as an individual for the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championship and earned three All-American honors. In her senior season, Buesseler led the Rebels to their first NCAA Championship Appearance in 15 years. Along the way, the Stacy, Minnesota, product was a member of an NCAA record smallbore relay and helped Ole Miss rewrite the record books as it won a program-record 11 matches and finished the regular season as GARC Co-Champions. At NCAAs, Buesseler posted an aggregate score of 1170 to help the Rebels turn in a team score of 4710 and place third overall as a team. Buesseler plans to return to Ole Miss in the fall and compete with her teammates, taking advantage of her extra year of eligibility.
Myers — an exercise science major with a minor in general business from Houston, Texas — has been named to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll and the Spring Academic Honor Roll. He has also been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dean's Honor Roll and Chancellor's Honor Roll a total of six times in three years in Oxford. Around the community, Myers has taken part in Reading with the Rebels at local elementary schools, the Bats and Balls Clinic, teaching the basics of baseball to young athletes, as well as Adopt-a-Basket, providing meals for local families during the holidays. Myers also participated in a Night to Shine and has donated his time to LeBonheur Children's Hospital.
On the field, Myers has been a pillar in the Rebel bullpen. In 2019, Myers made the third-most relief appearances on the team. He was poised for another productive season in 2020, but missed the shortened campaign as he underwent Tommy John Surgery. Myers worked hard to return to the field in 2021 and picked up right where he left off. He has made the fourth-most relief appearances on the team this season and owns a 9.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio. For his career, Myers holds a 4.73 K/BB ratio and a 5-1 record thanks to 25 appearances with one run or fewer allowed, 16 career scoreless outings and 17 outings with multiple strikeouts.
