Track & Field Splits for Regular Season Finale at MSU and LSU

4/29/2021 | Track and Field

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field splits for the final regular season weekend of the year, with the Rebel distance runners and throwers heading to Mississippi State for the Maroon and White Invite (April 30-May 1), and the remainder heading to Baton Rouge for the LSU Invitational on Saturday (May 1).

MEN'S NOTES

• Ole Miss jumped into the men's national top-25 this past week, coming in at No. 25 in the Week Five USTFCCCA Rating Index as one of 11 ranked men's teams in the SEC. This is the first appearance outdoors for Ole Miss since the 2018 outdoor season.

• The dynamic Rebel distance squad will return to the track en masse at Mississippi State this weekend. In the latest USTFCCCA index, the Ole Miss distance runners are accounting for 73.55 of 85.67 total points – 67.1 alone from Waleed Suliman and Mario Garcia Romo. Suliman owns 41.24 of those points following spectacular races in the 1500-meter (No. 2 NCAA, 3:36.53) and 800-meter (No. 11 NCAA, 1:47.74), while Garcia Romo's 3:37.17 (No. 4 NCAA) is chipping in 25.86 points. In total, Ole Miss is receiving 17.29 points from the 800-meter and 56.26 from the 1500-meter.

• Ole Miss stands as the second-best 1500-meter squad nationally at an impressive average time of 3:39.63. Leading that charge is All-American senior Waleed Suliman, who led one of the fastest 1500-meter races this season at the distance-heavy Joe Walker Invite. He clocked in at the NCAA's second-best time at 3:36.53, a U.S. Olympic Trials standard for Suliman who became a U.S. citizen in late 2019 after spending his childhood across Sudan, Jordan and Virginia. Suliman's time puts him at No. 2 in Ole Miss history as well behind Robert Domanic's 2018 record of 3:36.33, which was the ninth-fastest in NCAA history at the time it was run.

Mario Garcia Romo was right behind Suliman in that blazing 1500-meter race, finishing at what is now the NCAA's fourth-best time of 3:37.17. Also contributing in the 1500-meter are Cade Bethmann (3:41.96, 44th NCAA) and Everett Smulders (3:42.86, 57th NCAA).

• Ole Miss also owns the second-best 800-meter team in the latest USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings, led by Waleed Suliman's 1:47.74 from Florida's Tom Jones Memorial (11th NCAA), and followed by Baylor Franklin (1:48.27, 17th NCAA), Cade Bethmann (1:48.76, 27th NCAA) and Everett Smulders (1:50.30, 92nd NCAA).

Joseph Benedetto will return to the hammer ring at MSU this week. He currently ranks No. 31 in the NCAA and No. 19 in the East Region at his career-best heave of 65.95m (216-05), the second-best throw in school history.

Daniel Viveros also returns to action this week at MSU in both the shot put and discus. Viveros' PR of 18.38m (60-03.75) ranks 45th in the NCAA and 24th in the East Region, and ranks third in school history.

• All-American senior jumper Allen Gordon is also chipping in 10.83 points by himself across the long jump (7.91m/25-11.50, 12th NCAA) and high jump (2.16m/7-1, 27th NCAA). Gordon is currently the only jumper in the NCAA to have jumped 7' 1" in the high jump, 25' 11.50" in the long jump and 50' 2" in the triple jump this year, and is alongside reigning NCAA Indoor champion JuVaughn Harrison of LSU as the only jumpers to have cleared those distances in the high jump and long jump this outdoor season. Gordon and Harrison will go head-to-head in the long jump this Saturday at LSU.

WOMEN'S NOTES

• Ole Miss enters the weekend ranked within the USTFCCCA's #EventSquad Top-10 in four different events on the women's side: hammer (1st), discus (3rd), shot put (6th) and pole vault (6th).

• The deep Rebel women's throws squad returns to action at MSU this week following a week of rest. Combined, the Rebel throwers are accounting for 22.95 of the total 42.78 points the No. 44 Ole Miss women own in the Week Five rankings.

• Ole Miss stands as one of two schools with three women's hammer throwers at or beyond 200 feet (North Dakota State, four), and one of two (alongside Cal) with multiple beyond 217 feet – Jasmine Mitchell (13th NCAA, 66.37m/217-09) and Shey Taiwo (14th NCAA, 66.35m/217-08). Jalani Davis also ranks in the NCAA top-50 in 30th at 63.54m (208-06), with Deborah Bulai sitting 41st in the East Region at 58.99m (193-06).

Jalani Davis' big day in the shot put from Florida's Tom Jones Memorial two weeks ago of 17.01m (55-09.75) ranks 18th in the NCAA, while Tedreauna Britt's career-best discus mark of 54.51m (178-10) sits at No. 31.

• The Ole Miss pole vault squad will be at full strength, and enter not only as one of the top teams nationally but also with two of the top standouts so far this season. Lyndsey Reed currently sits 10th in the nation at 4.28m (14-00.50), the second-best height in school history that also made her just the second Rebel to ever join the 14-foot club indoors or outdoors. Samara McConnell also ranks in the top-25 in 24th at her outdoor PR of 4.19m (13-9), the fourth-best in school history.

• Like the men, the women's distance squad will be at full force across both meets this weekend. Sintayahu Vissa and Loral Winn will both look to lower their already fast 800-meter times at LSU on Saturday, with Vissa entering with the NCAA's No. 25 time at 2:05.01. That time ranks second all-time at Ole Miss and was the fastest by a Rebel since 2015. Vissa also owns the school record in the 1500-meter, which she dismantled by three seconds at 4:16.70 (No. 33 NCAA) in her first career attempt on April 9.

Anna Elkin will lead a deep group in the 1500-meter at Mississippi State on Friday night. Elkin's last race was a school-record 5K of 16:01.34 (No. 41 NCAA), run at the Virginia Challenge on April 16.
