Softball Scores Early and Often in 8-2 Win Over No. 25 UCF

4/30/2021 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (32-16) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on Friday, easing past No. 25 UCF (34-13-1) 8-2 in game one of the series at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Starter Anna Borgen got the win in the circle, posting four scoreless innings with three hits allowed. Ava Tillmann provided a pair of solid relief frames, surrendering only a pair of unearned runs, while freshman Aynslie Furbush closed things out with a scoreless seventh.

The Rebels collected a pair of hits in Autumn Gillespie, Abbey Latham and Nyomi Jones. Each clubbing no-doubt home runs, Gillespie and Latham were responsible for much off the offensive output on the night. Gillespie crossed the plate three times during the game, while Latham drove in three runs.

It did not take long for the Rebels to get the offense going, leading off the game with a walk and back-to-back singles to get leadoff batter Paige Smith home on Jessica Puk's single. Latham then dropped down a bunt single to plate Gillespie, with Mikayla Allee later drawing a bases loaded HBP to make it 3-0 in favor of Ole Miss after the first.

Latham and Gillespie added on in the second and third, respectively, both pummeling balls over the middle of the plate for towering solo shots to left-center.

The Rebels added two more in the fourth, capitalizing on back-to-back walks to open the inning. With runners at second and third, Sydney Gutierrez ripped a line drive that was snow coned in left, giving Smith plenty of time to come home on the sacrifice. Gillespie scored soon after, coming across on an error at shortstop for the Knights.

After a passed ball and a throwing error allowed UCF to claw back a pair of runs in the fifth, Ole Miss immediately responded in the home half. Nyomi Jones led off with a double down the left line and scored on Allee's single to center field.

Ole Miss failed to score for the first time in the sixth but by then it was academic as Tillmann and Furbush closed things down the rest of the way.

Quick Hits
• Ole Miss extends its home non-conference winning streak to 40-straight games, dating back to 2018.
• The Rebel pitching staff has allowed just three earned runs over the last nine games, totaling 60 innings.
• Friday's game was the first with multiple home runs for Ole Miss since clobbering four in the 9-4 win at No. 15 LSU.
Autumn Gillespie's three runs scored matched the most in a game by a Rebel this season, accomplished six times.

Up Next
