Weather Postponed Final Events, Saturday Schedule Adjusted
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field put on a clinic in one of the most competitive meets nationwide this week, winning six events and recording several spectacular performances at Day One of the Joe Walker Invite on Friday. Inclement weather rolling through the Oxford area Friday evening forced the men's 1500-meter invitational, women's 800-meter invitational and both invitational editions of the 5K races to be postponed until Saturday.
The hype surrounding Friday centered around a dynamite distance lineup in the evening, but the Rebel field athletes did not disappoint throughout the day, winning five of those six events in demonstrative fashion.
Ole Miss received two more superb outings from newcomers Jasmine Mitchell and Jalani Davis in the women's hammer and shot put, respectively. Mitchell stunned with a monster 23-foot, 8-inch career-best toss of 66.37m (217-09) to win by more than 12 feet. This is only the third time Mitchell has ever thrown the hammer as a Rebel, and she already ranks second all-time behind NCAA Champion Janeah Stewart's 2018 national title winning toss of 72.92m (239-03). Additionally, Mitchell ranks eighth in the NCAA at the moment.
Davis had another stellar week in the shot put, winning by more than three feet at a two-foot PR of 16.49m (54-01.25). She already ranks fourth all-time at Ole Miss as just the fourth member of the 54-foot club, and at the moment she sits No. 23 in the NCAA.
Newcomers dominated the women's pole vault as well. Lyndsey Reed and Samara McConnell provided yet another one-two punch for the Rebels, with Reed becoming just the second member of the 14-foot club in Ole Miss history. Reed won in the jump-off against her teammate McConnell, clearing 4.28m (14-00.50) to join All-American Lindsey Murray above 14 feet in school history. McConnell settled for runner-up at a still strong outdoor PR of 4.18m (13-08.50), the third-best in school history. The duo currently rank No. 7 and No. 17 in the NCAA, respectively.
Ole Miss swept both the men's and women's long jump, with All-American Allen Gordon winning on a new season-best 7.71m/25-03.25 (0.5), and senior Kieshonna Brooks coming out hot with a near-PR of 6.16m/20-02.50 (1.0).
The Rebels excelled in the much-hyped mini distance carnival Friday night as well. Ole Miss newcomer Sintayehu Vissa shattered the school record in the women's 1500-meter in her first career attempt, finishing fifth at 4:16.70 in a bonkers invitational section that featured nine sub-4:20 times and the top three times in the NCAA this season. Vissa's new record took down Shelby Brown's 2017 record of 4:19.09, and currently puts her at No. 11 in the NCAA.
Other Rebel women clocking strong times in the 1500-meter invitational were Anna Elkin at 4:22.02 (No. 6 all-time) and Loral Winn at 4:22.55 (No. 7 all-time).
Baylor Franklin (fourth, 1:48.27) and Cade Bethmann (eighth, 1:48.76) both clocked NCAA top-15 times in the men's 800-meter invitational, a race that featured the NCAA's top time from Miami of Ohio's Finley McLear (1:46.51). For Franklin, it registers as an overall PR and the No. 11 time in school history. The duo currently rank No. 11 and No. 14 in the NCAA, respectively.
All-American sprinter Brandee Presley claimed the spotlight early on the track, taking advantage of a rare calm moment in the wind to clock a wind-legal PR in the 200-meter dash at 23.40 (1.3) – the sixth-best time in school history and the No. 21 time in the NCAA this season. Fellow All-American Elijah Dryer took third in the men's 200, tying his PR at 21.00 (0.4).
Competition is set to resume at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex at 10 a.m. CT with the resumption of the men's decathlon.
