Sophomore Jalani Davis Finished Second at Third-Best Shot Put Mark in Ole Miss History
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Rebel throwers stepped into the limelight for the Ole Miss track & field team on Day Two of the SEC Outdoor Championships, scoring a combined 18 meet points and snaring an impressive silver medal in the women's shot put on Friday night.
Sophomore Jalani Davis – who is competing in her first career SEC Outdoor meet due to the 2020 meet being canceled – was crucial for Ole Miss, scoring 13 points on Friday alone across the shot put and hammer. Davis opened the day by leading the Rebels in the hammer, finishing fourth at a four-foot PR of 64.64m (212-01) – fourth-best in school history, as well as No. 25 in the NCAA and No. 14 in the East Region.
However, Davis followed that up with an eye-opening performance in the shot put under the lights to cap off Day Two for Ole Miss. Davis was in second heading into finals, but Alabama's Nickolette Dunbar took over the runner-up slot in the fourth round on a toss of 17.22m (56-06.00). Davis fouled her fifth attempt, but on her final try she uncorked a mammoth two-foot PR of 17.52m (57-05.75) to win the silver medal. Tennessee's Latavia Maines won on the final throw of the competition at an NCAA No. 2 heave of 18.71m (61-04.75), which broke the SEC meet record set by Ole Miss' Raven Saunders in 2016 of 18.58m (60-11.50).
For Davis, her top toss on Friday improved upon her spot in No. 3 all-time at Ole Miss behind Saunders (19.76m/64-10.00) and Janeah Stewart (18.03m/59-02.00). It also moved her into the upper echelon nationally this season, currently sitting at No. 11 in the NCAA, No. 4 in the East Region and No. 18 in the United States among all throwers.
Also scoring for the Rebel women's throwers on Friday included Mitchell in the shot put in seventh place (16.31m/53-06.25; PR, No. 5 all-time) and Shey Taiwo in the hammer in seventh (64.28m/210-11).
All-American senior Allen Gordon began what will be a busy 48-hour period with the first two stops on his SEC triple attempt. Gordon opened with a solid finish in a bonkers men's high jump final, taking fourth place at 2.17m (7-01.50). Gordon was surgical over his first two bars, remaining clean all through his final height before bowing out when the bar was moved up to 2.21m (7-03.00) – which would have been a sizable career-best. LSU's JuVaughn Harrison (2.36m/7-08.75) and Tennessee's Darryl Sullivan (2.33m/7-07.75) duked it out in a final for the ages, recording the top two high jump marks in the world this year, with Harrison's winning height standing as the second-best in NCAA history.
Gordon also made the final in the long jump, but fell shy of scoring in ninth place at 7.46m (24-05.75).
Other scorers for Ole Miss included two other Rebels in their first career SEC Outdoor meets: Samara McConnell in the women's pole vault (sixth, 4.19m/13-09.00; ties PR) and Daniel Viveros in the men's shot put (eighth, 18.19m/59-08.25).
Ole Miss set itself up nicely for a haul of points on Saturday following several qualifying performances in the prelim track events on Friday night.
Most important of those was a demonstrative showing by the Rebel men's distance crew in the 1500-meter qualifying. After only qualifying one of six in a contentious men's 800-meter prelim on Thursday, the Rebels took care of business handedly in the 1500, sending five of six through to Saturday's final – all on an auto-qualifier basis.
Cade Bethmann and Michael Coccia were tested early in the first heat, as Alabama's Eliud Kipsang took off from everyone en route to an SEC meet record 3:36.60. But the Rebel duo stuck together and held on for the final two automatic qualifier spots, with Bethmann in second (3:43.36) and Coccia third (3:44.98). Waleed Suliman, who will also run in the 800-meter final on Saturday, took an AQ spot in the third heat at the seventh-best time (3:46.99), while Mario Garcia Romo (16th, 3:53.12) and Dalton Hengst (17th, 3:53.55) were the beneficiaries of a tactical second heat in which they took the top two spots.
All-American Brandee Presley showed immense grit to punch her ticket to the women's 100-meter dash final. In the third heat, Presley fell behind early, but summoned the will to accelerate down the stretch and claw her way toward the second AQ spot in her heat – finishing with the seventh-best prelim time at 11.52 (+0.5). Presley is the first Rebel to qualify for the women's 100-meter dash final since Shannon Ray did so in 2015 (eighth, 11.77).
On the other hand, Loral Winn was able to punch her ticket to finals via a time qualifier position out of heat two of the women's 1500-meter prelim. Winn ended up with the 11th-fastest time of the day at 4:23.62, which was the final time qualifier entry awarded.
Hurdler Kenney Broadnax came heartbreakingly close to joining the fun in finals on Saturday, falling just two hundredths of a second shy even after running the best time of his career – a wind-legal 13.88 (+1.1) that improves on his slot at No. 5 all-time at Ole Miss while also moving him up to No. 39 in the NCAA and No. 20 in the East Region.
The Rebel multi athletes completed two grueling days of competition on Friday across the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. Pierce Genereux (11th) and Peyton Lowery (12th) both recorded exactly 5,720 points, with that total standing as a new PR for Lowery. In the women's heptathlon, Kieshonna Brooks came just short of scoring in her return to the event at her ninth-place total of 5,266 points. Also competing were Sara Van Aken (13th, 5,090) and Meg Goebel (16th, 4,272).
Ole Miss will conclude its stay at Texas A&M for the SEC Outdoor Championships on Saturday, with Day Three set to commence for the Rebels at 2:30 p.m. CT with men's discus and men's triple jump. Fans will be able to watch the action live on SEC Network beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
