Rebels Take Down Air Rifle Program Record
WEST POINT, N.Y. – On the one-year anniversary of her first perfect air rifle score, Lea Horvath did it again. The sophomore couldn't miss, firing a 600 as she helped lead No. 5 Ole Miss rifle to a 4735-4138 victory over John Jay College Sunday morning.
Horvath's legacy in the rifle community continues to grow as she fired the 18th perfect air rifle score in NCAA history and the fifth this season. She also joins exclusive company as one of only four athletes ever to do it multiple times.
As a team, Ole Miss posted its second-best team score in program history with a 4735 and set the air rifle team record in the process. Additionally, all eight Rebels finished inside the top eight overall in the match. Horvath led the way with an 1189, followed by Jillian Zakrzeski and Abby Buesseler with an 1181 and 1180.
The Rebels started the match strong with six members shooting scores of 580 or better. Horvath and Kristen Derting went one-two (589 and 588), both firing perfect prone marks in the process. Just a point back was Buesseler with a 587. Freshman M'Leah Lambdin tied her career-high with a 583, and Zakrzeski rounded out the counters with a 582. Not factoring into the team score was Erin Walsh with a 582 as well.
In air rifle, all eyes were on Horvath as she fired 60 perfect shots. Just one point shy of perfection herself was Zakrzeski, who tallied a career-high 599, dropping one shot in her second series. Martina Gratz added a strong 596 to the team's score, and Buesseler's 593 capped things off for the team score.
Horvath's 600 was the perfect ending to a stellar weekend of competition for Ole Miss. The Rebels fired their top two scores in program history, including a school record 4737 on Saturday and an air rifle team record with a mark of 2388. Ole Miss returns to Oxford for its final home match of the regular season against Memphis and NCAA Qualifier on February 12 and 19, respectively.
