Rebels Move to 3-1 on the Weekend
TROY, Ala. – Ole Miss softball moved to 3-1 on the weekend at the Troy Invitational, toppling Eastern Kentucky 8-0 and falling one-run short against Troy.
Tate Whitley tallied five hits and scored five times over the course of both games. Bre Roper also tallied five hits between both contests.
GAME ONE: OLE MISS 8, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
For the second day in a row, Ole Miss started strong out of the gate en route to an 8-0 run-rule victory over Eastern Kentucky. Whiley reached base every time she stepped to the plate, going 3-for-3, while Abbey Latham drove in five runs on the afternoon, tying her career-high. In the circle, Aynslie Furbush and Brooke Vestal combined to throw the Rebels' second shutout of the season.
Latham powered the offense early, blasting her first home run of the season, a three-run shot, over the 220 wall in center minutes into the game. The offense continued to rally, batting around and loading the bases, but the EKU pitcher was able to minimize the damage and escape with a strikeout.
The Rebels added another run in the second and third innings. Whitley walked and came around to score on an RBI fielders' choice in the second and then drove in Angelina DeLeon in the following inning.
After being held in check in the fourth inning, Latham drove in two more to extend the lead to seven with her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game.
Furbush worked through the first four innings effortlessly, only allowing two runners to reach base on one hit. She gave way to Vestal, who made her Rebel debut in the fifth, striking out the first two batters she faced. Her first victim reached on a drop third strike, but Lexie Brady caught her stealing on a strike-em-out throw-em-out double-play.
With Ole Miss up 7-0 in the sixth, freshman Makenna Segal stepped to the plate for her first collegiate at bat. She got all of a 3-2 pitch, belting her first career home run to bring the run-rule into effect. Vestal came back for the final half inning, striking out two more batters to close out the game.
GAME TWO: OLE MISS 3, TROY 4
Ole Miss and Troy battled until the final out as a late rally fell one run short in the nightcap.
It only took two at bats for the Rebels to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Whitley recorded an infield single, and Roper belted one off the wall in left-center, driving in the first run. With Anna Borgen dealing on the mound through two innings, the Rebels added another run to their lead. To no one's surprise, Whitley singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
Troy capitalized on a four-run third with a pair of doubles and a two-run home run. The Rebels threatened in the fifth and sixth innings, moving runners into scoring position, but Troy was able to work out of the jams unscathed.
Down to their final three outs, Nyomi Jones led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. After back-to-back strikeouts, Latham and Smith stepped up to the plate and battled for walks. With the bases loaded, Sydney Gutierrez tapped one back to the pitcher who misfielded the ball, allowing the Rebels to cut the lead to one. Mikayla Allee then stepped to the plate and hit a line drive on a rope, but an impressive running catch in the right-center gap ended the ball game.
