Rebel Men Run No. 6 Time in NCAA History

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Ole Miss track & field's distance medley relay squads put on a show in a spectacular day of DMR racing at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday morning.

The day started off with a powerful showing from the Rebel women's quartet of Anna Elkin (1200-meter; 3:25.0), Jayda Eckford (400-meter; 54.9), Loral Winn (800-meter; 2:06.6) and Sintayehu Vissa (mile; 4:30.4), who together dismantled the Ole Miss record in the DMR. Ole Miss won a blistering final that featured four sub-11 minute times, topping the group narrowly at a new school record time of 10:57.76.

That time thoroughly separated from the previous school record of 11:04.27 set just last season at the SEC Indoor Championships by Winn, Toni Glatz, Vissa and Maddie King. Furthermore, it almost virtually puts Ole Miss into the national meet in the DMR for the second consecutive season (and just the second time ever), as that time currently ranks No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the SEC. The top-12 times qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships after conference meets held around the country next week.

As it was run on an oversized track, historically, it puts Ole Miss as the No. 18 school on the NCAA all-time all-conditions list when including times from oversized tracks in the total.

The Ole Miss men, victors of seven of the last eight SEC titles in the DMR and owners of the fourth-fastest time in world history via their NCAA runner-up finish last season (9:20.75), put themselves right back into the national conversation amidst an incredible race on Saturday. The Rebels narrowly finished second at 9:21.94 to Notre Dame's 9:21.73, which led an absurd pack of seven teams that broke the 9:25 barrier. For context, prior to 2020, the collegiate record was Texas' 9:25.97 from 2008.

Ole Miss was led by the foursome of John Rivera Jr. (1200-meter; 2:51.4), Jacob Lough (400-meter; 48.7), Tiarnan Crorken (800-meter; 1:47.4) and Mario Garcia Romo (mile; 3:54.1). In Ole Miss history, that 9:21.94 ranks only behind the 9:20.75 from nationals last season, which still holds Ole Miss as the No. 2 performer in NCAA history with the third-best time. Additionally, it is now the sixth-fastest time on the NCAA all-conditions all-time list. This season, it sits at No. 3 in the NCAA and atop the SEC – which also virtually locks the Rebel men's DMR to the national meet for the sixth time in the last seven years.

The Rebel men's and women's track & field squads are now set for the 2022 SEC Indoor Championships, held this season at Texas A&M on Feb. 25-26.
