MEET NOTES

• Both Rebel squads enter the conference meet nationally ranked, with the Ole Miss women tied for an indoor program record at No. 7 and the Rebel men coming in at No. 17 in the latest USTFCCCA National Rating Index. This marks the ninth time that both Ole Miss teams have been nationally ranked at the same time indoors, with all nine instances coming within the past two seasons since first occurring in Week Two of the 2021 indoor campaign.

• The No. 7 ranking for the Rebel women is tied for the women's program record indoors with a No. 7 ranking in Week One of the 2008 season -- the first year national rankings were available. It is also the second-best in the combined history of the Ole Miss track & field program indoors behind a No. 6 appearance for the Rebel men in Week Two of the 2021 season. This constitutes the 10th top-10 appearance all-time for the Rebel women indoors, and their fourth in five chances this season.

• In total, the No. 7 ranking this past week stands as the 41st total appearance for the Rebel women in the top-25 since the rankings began in 2008. Additionally, this is the Ole Miss women's 18th appearance in the last 19 releases after being ranked for the entirety of the 2020 and 2021 indoor regular seasons. Under seventh-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, Ole Miss has notched 33 of those 41 total rankings.

• For the No. 17 Rebel men, this is their third top-25 appearance this season and their 39th time overall.

• Ole Miss owns a combined 23 marks within the NCAA top-50, 12 from the Rebel men and 11 from the women.

• All-American senior Shey Taiwo became the second Rebel ever named to The Bowerman Award Watch List and the first since Olympic medalist and 2016 Bowerman finalist Raven Saunders in 2018. Taiwo is in the midst of the greatest start to an indoor campaign in the history of the weight throw collegiately, currently ranking No. 2 in NCAA history and No. 3 in world history at 25.19m/82-07.75. The Bowerman Award, collegiate track & field's version of the Heisman Trophy, is given out annually to the most outstanding men's and women's athletes in the nation.

• Ole Miss has won eight total SEC weekly honors this indoor season, claiming a triple-feat on Jan. 25 from John Rivera Jr. (Men's Runner), Shey Taiwo (Women's Field) and Sintayehu Vissa (Co-Women's Runner), a double win on Feb. 15 from Taiwo (Women's Field) and Mario Garcia Romo (Men's Runner) and another trifecta most recently on Feb. 22 from the Ole Miss men's DMR (Men's Co-Runner), women's DMR (Women's Runner) and pole vaulter Lyndsey Reed (Women's Field).

• Ole Miss has won 47 SEC Indoor titles (37 men, 10 women) with 68 SEC Champions (58 men, 10 women).

• Ole Miss won five SEC titles in 2021 in the women's weight throw (Jasmine Mitchell), men's mile (Waleed Suliman), men's 3K (Mario Garcia Romo), men's 5K (Cole Bullock) and men's distance medley relay (Suliman, Marcus Dropik, Everett Smulders, Garcia Romo).

• Under Price-Smith, Ole Miss has set the highest SEC Indoor finish in women's competition (third, 2017) and tied for the best men's finish two different times with third-place finishes in 2016 and 2017.

• Ranked SEC women's schools: No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 LSU, No. 5 Kentucky, No. 7 OIe Miss, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 16 Tennessee, No. 23 South Carolina and No. 24 Alabama.

• Ranked SEC men's schools: No. 1 Arkansas, No. 4 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 17 Ole Miss, No. 21 LSU and No. 25 Texas A&M.

WOMEN'S NOTES

• All-American senior Shey Taiwo has taken the throwing world by storm at the start of her final collegiate indoor campaign, earning a slot on The Bowerman Award Watch List update that came out on Feb. 2. Taiwo – a native of South Holland, Illinois – is in the midst of the greatest start to an indoor campaign in the weight throw ever by a collegian. She has put together three of the best consecutive weeks in the history of the weight throw collegiately, and her latest feat at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge of 25.19m/82-07.75 improved upon her spot as the No. 2 performer in NCAA history and moved her up to No. 3 in the history of the world while also beating out two-time reigning U.S. champion, training partner and former teammate, Janeah Stewart, by four feet.

• Her throw stands individually as the third-best ever by a collegian, trailing only Brittany Riley's 2007 collegiate record 25.56m/83-10.25 and her 2008 NCAA title winning 25.34m/83-01.75, both of which won her an NCAA title under the tutelage of Ole Miss head coach Connie Price-Smith and throws coach John Smith while at Southern Illinois. Riley and Taiwo are the only collegians ever with multiple 25-meter throws.

• Additionally, that throw ranks as the seventh-best individually in the history of the world, moving past Stewart's 25.08m/82-03.50 from 2020 to take sole possession of third on the all-time world list. Taiwo now only trails former Ole Miss volunteer assistant coach Gwen Berry's 2017 world record of 25.60m/84-0 and Riley's 2007 NCAA record on the all-time world list. Berry, Riley, Taiwo and Stewart are the only throwers in world history with multiple 25-meter throws, and all are or were disciples of Price-Smith and Smith during their collegiate and professional careers.

• In her last three meets, Taiwo has improved three-and-a-half feet to 24.11m/79-01.25 at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Jan. 21, three-feet to 25.02m/82-1 at the Indiana Relays on Jan. 28 and six more inches to her latest best of 25.19m/82-07.75. In each of those meets, Taiwo set the NCAA record for best throw at that point of the indoor season on Jan. 21 (24.11m), Jan. 28 (25.02m) and Feb. 11 (25.19m).

• Among all-time throws in NCAA history, her field series from Vanderbilt two weeks ago ranks No. 3 (25.19m), No. 8 (24.51m), No. 13 (24.22m), No. 14 (24.21m), No. 43 (23.55m) and No. 71 (23.21m). This season, she owns three of the top-10 throws all-time, as well as seven of the top-25 and 14 of the top-50.

• In her storied Rebel career, Taiwo is a four-time All-American and four-time NCAA qualifier with 14 career NCAA points scored and 33 career SEC points scored. Taiwo was the 2021 NCAA runner-up outdoors in the hammer at a 16-foot PR of 71.27m/233-10, which made her the ninth-best performer in NCAA history and sixth-best in the history of the NCAA Outdoor meet. Taiwo used that performance to qualify for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, where she finished 14th overall in the hammer. Taiwo was also the NCAA bronze medalist in the weight throw indoors last season. On a conference level, Taiwo's 33 career SEC points come from seven different scoring occasions, including an SEC title in the weight throw in 2020 and a runner-up finish in 2021 to teammate and fellow All-American, Jasmine Mitchell.

• Taiwo is the second Rebel to ever be named to the Bowerman Watch List, joining two-time Olympian Raven Saunders, who made 15 total appearances on the Watch List and was a Bowerman finalist in 2016 and semifinalist in 2017.

• Fellow All-American junior and reigning SEC weight throw champion Jasmine Mitchell ranks right behind her on the 2022 national list at her career-best 23.62m/77-6, the sixth-best throw in the world this season. That mark also puts her as the No. 11 performer in collegiate history.

• Mitchell and Taiwo, who last year became the first teammates in NCAA history to throw beyond 23 meters in the same season (let alone the same meet) after doing so at the 2021 SEC Championships, are now the first duo to eclipse 77 feet in the same season, and both again did so within the same meet at Vanderbilt. The pair finished back-to-back at the 2021 NCAA Championships, with Taiwo taking third and Mitchell fourth in the nation.

• Also ranking in the weight throw is junior Jalani Davis, whose PR of 22.96m/75-4 ranks fourth in the NCAA and 11th worldwide this season. Additionally, that throw launches Davis up to No. 18 on the all-time NCAA list, making Ole Miss the first school ever with three 75-foot throwers -- and all within the same season. On that all-time performer list, the Rebels own No. 2 (Shey Taiwo), No. 11 (Jasmine Mitchell) and No. 18 (Davis), with former pupils of Price-Smith and Smith coming in at No. 1 (Brittany Riley, SIU, 2007), No. 7 (Janeah Stewart, Ole Miss, 2018) and Jeneva McCall (No. 10, SIU, 2012).

• Davis also owns an NCAA top-25 mark in the shot put at her indoor PR of 16.70m/54-09.50, the No. 25 throw in the NCAA, No. 5 in the SEC, and No. 3 all-time at Ole Miss indoors.

• Davis is coming off a superb 2021 outdoor season that saw her take SEC Outdoor runner-up honors at a monster toss of 17.52m/57-05.75 and stand as the lone thrower nationwide -- men's or women's -- to triple at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

• Ole Miss owns one of the most fearsome women's weight throw squads in NCAA history, with four owning career-best throws of 69 feet or further, four 72 feet or further, three 75 feet or further, and the top-two -- Taiwo and Mitchell -- at 77 feet or further and both within the all-time NCAA top-11. Ole Miss has won four of the last five SEC women's weight throw titles, with Janeah Stewart repeating in 2017 and 2018 before Taiwo won in 2020 and Mitchell in 2021.

• Also ranking in the throwing events is Tedreauna Britt, who sits at No. 39 nationally in the shot put at 16.22m/53-02.75 (No. 6 SEC), as well as No. 48 in the weight throw at her PR of 20.05m/65-09.50 (No. 11 SEC).

• The Rebel women's DMR of Anna Elkin (1200m; 3:25.0), Jayda Eckford (400m; 54.9), Loral Winn (800m; 2:06.6) and Sintayehu Vissa (mile; 4:30.4) won a stacked women's distance medley relay final at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational last week, leading a group of four sub-11 relays at a massive new school record of 10:57.76. They are the first Rebel unit to break 11 minutes, shattering the 2021 school record by seven seconds (11:04.27). That time ranks as the 18th-best in NCAA history on the all-conditions list, as well as fourth in the NCAA and second in the SEC this season. For their efforts, the Ole Miss relay squad was awarded SEC weekly honors as the SEC Women's Runners of the Week for Feb. 22.

• Last season, Ole Miss qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's DMR for the first time, where they finished eighth as First-Team All-Americans. That relay included Winn, Toni Glatz, Vissa and Maddie King.

• All-American junior Sintayehu Vissa has led an all-out assault on the Ole Miss record book to start the indoor season, currently ranking No. 6 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the SEC at her mile record of 4:32.70 from the Vanderbilt Invitational, and her 3K record of 9:04.95 that ranks 25th nationally and fourth in the conference.

• Vissa's mile time was an eight-second PR over her previous school record of 4:40.99, and that mile race was only her second as a Rebel since transferring from Division II Saint Leo last season.

• In her first collegiate 3K race at Indiana two weeks ago, Vissa took down teammate Anna Elkin's school record of 9:17.19 by almost 13 seconds, and it stands as the best run by a Rebel on a non-oversized track by nearly 26 seconds over Mary Alex England's 9:30.82 at the 2017 Razorback Invitational.

• Vissa took the track by storm in 2021 shortly after joining the Ole Miss roster, running the fastest 800-meter time since 2017 at 2:06.45 in her debut at Arkansas on Jan. 29 before becoming the fourth and fastest Rebel to set the previous mile record at 4:40.99 at the Music City Challenge on Feb. 12. Vissa was also a First-Team All-American indoors on the Rebel women's DMR that finished eighth, she was an NCAA East Region qualifier outdoors in the 800-meter where she ran 2:04.53, and this past fall she became the first Rebel woman to ever earn All-American status in the cross country season after a 33rd-place finish at the national meet.

• Junior and SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week Lyndsey Reed broke her own school record in the pole vault for the third straight meet at 4.41m/14-05.50, winning amidst a stacked field at the Arkansas Qualifier last Friday (Feb. 18). That height was a three-inch PR that puts her at No. 6 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the SEC. Over the last month, Reed has broken the previous school record of 4.30m/14-01.25 set by Lindsey Murray in 2018 by nearly a half-foot. Reed was an Honorable Mention All-American outdoors last season.

• Sophomore Samara McConnell currently sits within the national-qualifying top-16 in the pole vault at her career-best 4.34m/14-02.75 (No. 5 SEC) from the Music City Challenge, which tied for the school record with Reed before her improvement at Arkansas last week.

MEN'S NOTES

• Of the 12 NCAA top-50 marks for the Rebel men entering this weekend of action, 10 belong to the deep group of Ole Miss distance runners.

• The Ole Miss men's DMR of John Rivera Jr. (1200m; 2:51.4), Jacob Lough (400m; 48.7), Tiarnan Crorken (800m; 1:47.4) and Mario Garcia Romo (mile; 3:54.1) finished second in one of the fastest races in NCAA history at an SEC-leading and NCAA No. 3 9:21.94 at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 19. That time stands as the sixth-fastest in NCAA history on the all-conditions list (as it was run on Notre Dame's oversized track). The 9:21.94 run by the Rebels last week was one of seven times that broke 9:25 in the race, all of which would have broken the previous collegiate record prior to 2020. For their efforts, the Rebel men's DMR was named co-winners of the SEC Men's Runners of the Week award.

• Ole Miss has remained the dominant force in the DMR in the SEC and one of the best ever nationally over the past decade. Last season, the Rebel men's DMR of Everett Smulders, Elijah Dryer, John Rivera Jr. and Mario Garcia Romo finished NCAA Runner-Up at 9:20.75 -- the third-best time in NCAA history and fourth-best in the history of the world that obliterated the Ole Miss school record set just two weeks earlier at the SEC Indoor Championships.

• At SECs last year, Waleed Suliman, Marcus Dropik, Smulders and Garcia Romo set an SEC meet record at 9:29.35 to win their seventh DMR title in the last eight seasons.

• Ole Miss holds a fearsome set of men's milers yet again, with six current Rebels below the 4-minute barrier and four having done so this season -- three of whom have done so multiple times. Leading that group is All-American senior Mario Garcia Romo, who led a pack of 10 sub-4 milers at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge on Feb. 11.

• Garcia Romo won at a large PR of 3:53.36, which shattered Waleed Suliman's 2021 school record of 3:55.60 -- currently the second-best time in the NCAA and the top time in the SEC this season. That time stands as an NCAA record on an oversized track, besting Washington's Izaic Yorks' 3:53.89 set in 2016, and if run on a regulation track it would have made him the No. 6 performer in NCAA history and the fastest miler in the history of the SEC.

• Garcia Romo also took down his own school record in the 3K less than a day later, winning at 7:47.56, currently the No. 23 time nationally and No. 2 in the SEC. Garcia Romo has set three total schools records in three meets (1000m, mile, 3K).

• Garcia Romo was the lone collegian in the field of the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on Jan. 29, where he finished sixth at 3:57.98. He beat out a field of eight professional runners that included four Olympians. He joined former Rebels Robert Domanic (2018 Wanamaker Mile participant) and Sean Tobin (2018 Millrose invitational mile participant) as recent Rebels to have run at the prestigious Millrose Games. Domanic finished 10th in the 2018 Wanamaker Mile.

• At Vanderbilt, Garcia Romo broke Doug Smith's 1985 Ole Miss record in the 1000-meter race (2:24.68), becoming the 10th-best performer in NCAA history in the event at a new Rebel record of 2:20.12. Runner-up Cruz Culpepper also would have broken the Ole Miss record at his time of 2:20.66.

• Garcia Romo is one of two returning SEC Indoor individual champions from 2021 after winning the 3K last season in addition to running anchor on the SEC title DMR team. The other is Cole Bullock, who ranks fourth in the SEC at his 5K PR of 13:48.01.

• Garcia Romo is coming off a spectacular track season in 2021 that saw him earn three First-Team All-American honors, two SEC titles, 12 total NCAA points and 17.5 SEC points. He also ran anchor on the 2021 Ole Miss men's distance medley relay team that finished NCAA runner-up at the fourth-fastest time in world history at 9:20.75, which only finished behind the world record holders of Oregon. Garcia Romo split an incredible 3:53.28 on the 1600-meter anchor leg, his second sub-3:55 leg after running 3:54.69 to help the Rebel men win their seventh SEC title in the DMR in the last eight years at a meet record time of 9:29.35.

• Garcia Romo also finished third at the Spanish national meet in the hopes of qualifying for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and two days later on the final day of global qualifying he ran an Ole Miss 1500-meter record 3:35.79 at a last-chance meet in Spain. Garcia Romo closed his summer out with a silver medal at the European U23 Championships in Tallinn.

• Behind Garcia Romo in that stacked sub-4 mile field at the Music City Challenge two weeks ago were James Young and Shane Bracken, who both improved their mile PRs with their second sub-4s of the season. Young improved to 3:55.20, the second-best time in school history behind Garcia Romo's winning time, which puts Young at No. 9 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the SEC this season. Bracken, meanwhile, improved to 3:57.57 (No. 36 NCAA, No. 5 SEC), the fourth-best time in Ole Miss history.

• Four Rebels are currently ranked in the NCAA top-50 in the 800-meter, led once again by All-American senior John Rivera Jr.

• Rivera ranks 10th nationally and second in the SEC at his overall career-best of 1:47.48 from the Vanderbilt Invitational, the third-best ever run by a Rebel indoors and the fastest since Ryan Manahan ran 1:47.37 at the 2016 Penn State National. Rivera beat out two professional runners from the Atlanta Track Club for the win.

• In his season opener at UAB, Rivera broke his own school record in the 600-meter at a meet-record 1:17.45, toppling his old record of 1:17.90 at the same meet in 2020.

• Rivera was narrowly thwarted of an SEC individual title in the 800-meter last season as well, finishing as the silver medalist. Ole Miss won the mile, 3K, 5K and DMR, the closest to an SEC distance sweep since Arkansas did so in 1999. Rivera was an individual national qualifier and All-American for the cancelled 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 800-meter.

• Also owning NCAA top-50 times in the 800-meter are: Tiarnan Crorken (No. 15, 1:47.68), Baylor Franklin (No. 26, 1:48.14) and Everett Smulders (No. 49, 1:49.02).

• Bracken and Tiarnan Crorken were added to the Ole Miss roster just recently after joining as mid-year enrollees. Bracken hails from Ireland and transfers in from Division II Saint Leo University (where Rebel All-American Sintayehu Vissa ran), and where he was a two-time All-American in the 1500-meter outdoors. Crorken, meanwhile, is from Burnley, England, where he was the U23 English 1500-meter champion in 2021 and ran at the U23 European Championships in Tallinn. He owns a mile PR of 3:58.89.

• In its history, Ole Miss holds nine sub-four milers, all since 2018: Garcia Romo (3:53.36, 2022), Young (3:55.20, 2022), Waleed Suliman (3:55.60, 2021), Bracken (3:57.57, 2022), Sean Tobin (3:58.28, 2018), Derek Gutierrez (3:58.55, 2019), Everett Smulders (3:58.73, 2021), Baylor Franklin (3:59.12, 2021) and Dereck Elkins (3:59.46, 2022).

• Rebel newcomer Keirston Paige is off to a great start in the 60-meter hurdles, currently ranking 38th nationally and ninth in the SEC at a career-best 7.85 seconds from the Music City Challenge -- the sixth-best in Ole Miss history. Alongside Kenney Broadnax's 2020 time of 7.83, he is one of four active Rebels below eight seconds beside fellow newcomers Ahmad Young Jr. (7th, 7.92) and Spencer Brown (8th, 7.99).

TEAM NOTES

• Ole Miss is coming off a 2021 indoor season for the ages, where the Rebel men finished 10th overall at a program-record 20 NCAA points, and the women scored their third-most points ever with 12, which was good for 19th place overall. The men's 10th-place finish stood as the best by the Ole Miss men since 2001 (10th), and tied for the second-best behind only a tie for ninth in 1991.

• With 13 First or Second-Team All-Americans back from the 2021 indoor season, Ole Miss returns nearly all of that historic national roster, including all four members of the NCAA runner-up men's distance medley relay of Everett Smulders, Elijah Dryer, John Rivera Jr. and Mario Garcia Romo that ran the third-fastest time in NCAA history and fourth-fastest time in world history, only finishing behind the world record holders of Oregon.

• Other men's All-Americans returning include Second-Teamers Allen Gordon (high jump, 9th; long jump, 9th) and Baylor Franklin (800-meter, 12th). The lone All-American loss for the Rebel men is Waleed Suliman, who finished third in the mile and 15th in the 3K in 2021.

• The Ole Miss women, meanwhile, return five of six First-Team All-Americans, with the only departure being Maddie King from the eighth-place women's DMR squad that included returnees Toni Glatz, Sintayehu Vissa and Loral Winn.

• Ole Miss also returns one of the most fearsome women's throws units in the history of the NCAA for 2022. All-American duo Jasmine Mitchell and Shey Taiwo return after the pair went back-to-back at the national meet in the weight throw last season, with Taiwo finishing third and Mitchell fourth. Taiwo and Mitchell last season were the first teammates in the history of the NCAA to eclipse the 23-meter mark in the same season.

• A total of 26 new Rebels join the roster for 2022: pole vaulter Frankie Amore, sprinter Ariyonna Augustine, jumper Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley, distance runenr Shane Bracken, distance runner Aiden Britt, jumper Spencer Brown, pole vaulter/multi athlete Jose Corbo, distance runner Tiarnan Crorken, distance runner Dereck Elkins, thrower Mason Hickel, distance runner Hannah Ielfield, thrower Montel Johnson, pole vaulter Ford Maberry, sprinter Bria Mack, distance runner Chris Maxon, sprinter Keirston Paige, distance runner Miles Phillips, distance runner Cole Piotrowski, distance runner Chase Rose, distance runner Gabe Scales, jumper LaRiah Shannon, jumper Annie Strong, distance runner Lydia van Dijk, sprinter Isaiah Weasby, distance runner James Young and hurdler Ahmad Young Jr.

• Ole Miss enters year seven under head coach Connie Price-Smith, who has led the Rebels to new heights in her time in Oxford. On the track, the Rebels have collected seven NCAA top-25 team finishes, seven NCAA individual champions, five NCAA runners-up, 105 First or Second-Team All-Americans, 161 NCAA points, 50 SEC Champions and program-record SEC finishes in men's indoor (third, 2x), women's indoor (fifth, 2017) and women's outdoor (fifth, 2018). Nationally under her guidance, the track Rebels have recorded program records in women's indoor (T-12th, 2017) and the second-best ever in men's indoor (10th, 2021). In 21 years as a head coach at both Ole Miss and Southern Illinois dating back to 2002, Price-Smith has collected 12 NCAA event titles and mentored 179 All-Americans on the track.

• In its history indoors, Ole Miss has finished in the NCAA top-25 of the team standings 17 total times (12 times on the men's side, five times on the women's side).

• Ole Miss owns 121 First or Second-Team All-Americans indoors (80 men, 41 women), as well as eight NCAA titles (11 total NCAA Champions; nine men, two women). Of those 121, a total of 58 All-Americans (37 men, 21 women) have come under Price-Smith, as well as two NCAA titles (Raven Saunders, shot put, 2017; men's DMR, 2017).
