Malone’s Walk-Off Blast Seals Two-Game Sweep of VCU
2/27/2022 | Baseball
No. 2 Ole Miss Downs Rams 14-3 in Seven Innings
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 2 Ole Miss answered a three-run top of the first from VCU by scoring at least a run in each of the first five innings on its way to a 14-3 win on Sunday at Swayze Field.
But it was a two-run blast from Tywone Malone that went out of the park over the right field wall that may have gotten the biggest cheer of the day. The home run, Malone's first as a Rebel, ended the contest at that moment by run rule.
The Rebels (6-0) claimed the weekend series, winning two games from the Rams (2-4). Saturday's game was not played due to inclement weather.
Two Rebel errors contributed to those three VCU runs in the first inning. Despite the defensive miscues, Rebel starter Drew McDaniel got through the inning with only one of the runs being earned. The junior right-hander pitched three innings with three strikeouts and three walks while allowing no more runs to earn the win.
By then, the Rebel offense had put up eight runs of its own and was beginning to cruise. After five innings the lead was 12-3.
Ole Miss had five two-out hits through five innings which helped contribute to its one-sided advantage.
A two-run homer from Jacob Gonzalez kept things rolling in the second inning after a fly out to center by Peyton Chatagnier got Hayden Leatherwood home after he had reached on a walk. Gonzalez's shot drove in Calvin Harris who had gotten aboard on a base hit.
Senior left-hander John Gaddis took over for starter McDaniel and also went three innings. He faced 10 Rams with one strikeout and one hit but no damage.
Senior right-hander Brandon Johnson, in his first action of the season, pitched the top of the seventh inning, facing four VCU batters and striking out one.
And that's when Malone strolled to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the second pitch he saw from Ram reliever Nolan Wilson over the wall in right. The home run, on an 0-1 count, also scored Gonzalez who had walked.
Ole Miss had 14 hits to go along with its 14 runs. Rebel pitching held the Rams to only two hits on the day.
Kevin Graham and Justin Bench had three hits each to pace Ole Miss, while Tim Elko's three RBIs led the team in that department.
This week Ole Miss hosts ULM Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT and again Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT before heading to Central Florida for a weekend series in Orlando. Both games will be streamed on SEC Network +.
