Rebel Pitching Racks Up 16 Strikeouts In 10-2 Win Over ULM
3/1/2022 | Baseball
Rebels Improve to 7-0 Behind Strong Start from Freshman Hunter Elliott
The freshman from Tupelo left the game in the top of the fifth after giving up a leadoff single to William Perkins. It was only his third hit allowed in the game, the other two hits also singles.
Elliott, who had appeared in two games previously this season, was credited with two earned runs but had nine strikeouts and only one walk, facing 15 batters along the way.
The Warhawks (1-5) had picked up a run in the first on a Mason Holt single which got Trace Henry home after he had reached on a walk. But the Rebels (7-0) scored six runs in innings two through five, and that would ultimately be plenty in this one.
In the bottom of the second, there was actually an opportunity to get a few more runs than the two the Rebels scored. Ben Van Cleve flew out to center with the bases loaded to get a run home, while ULM starter Henry Shuffler's night was done when he walked in a run for a 2-1 Ole Miss lead.
Mikel Howell replaced Shuffler and was able to get his team off the field. A ball hit right back to Howell by Justin Bench resulted in a double play which ended the threat.
In the third, T.J. McCants singled home Jacob Gonzalez, who had walked, for a 3-1 Rebel lead. Ole Miss picked up two runs in the fourth on a Reagan Burford fly out that got Van Cleve across the plate after he led off with a double. Bench reached on an error and Calvin Harris, who had singled, came home.
ULM picked up a run in the top of the fifth. Right-handed freshman Riley Maddox took over for Elliott with a Warhawk on first, and the run was credited to Elliott.
There were two outs in the bottom of the fifth when McCants sent one out of the park to right field that gave the Rebels a four-run cushion again.
In the top of the seventh, ULM made some noise, chasing junior right-hander Matt Parenteau with two aboard and no outs. Sophomore right-hander Jack Dougherty entered and took care of things.
Leading 7-2, Ole Miss was able to add three runs in the eighth mainly due to ULM reliever Jack Engelmann walking five Rebels.
Dougherty got his first save of the season. Shuffler, the Warhawk starter, got the loss.
Ole Miss and Louisiana-Monroe meet again at 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday. Jack Washburn is the scheduled starter for the Rebels. The junior right-hander has two appearances and one start so far this season and a 2.25 ERA in four innings of work. Wednesday's action can be streamed live on SEC Network +.
