Rebel Bats Stay Red Hot in 16-2 Win Over Oral Roberts

3/11/2022 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. – No. 2 Ole Miss opened up a close game in the middle innings and rolled past Oral Roberts 16-2 Friday afternoon in game one of a three-game weekend series.

The score was 3-2, with the Rebels leading, heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but that's when things turned quickly. Two innings later that Ole Miss (12-1) lead had expanded to 12 runs at 14-2.

The biggest moment of the early innings for Ole Miss was arguably when starter John Gaddis (2-0) got Golden Eagle DH Dustin Demeter to strike out swinging. That left the bases loaded for ORU (9-4) and ended a major threat, with the Rebels leading by only one run at the time.

But in the bottom of the fourth, Ole Miss sent eight batters to the plate. The first runs of the inning came on a double by Peyton Chatagnier, driving in Hayden Leatherwood and Reagan Burford who had walked and doubled, respectively. Justin Bench singled to left to drive in Chatagnier. After Jacob Gonzalez walked and stole second, Tim Elko singled to left to score Gonzalez. Ole Miss led 7-2 after four innings.

After a scoreless top of the fifth for Gaddis, bottom of the fifth walks by Hayden Dunhurst and Kemp Alderman resulted in runs for the Rebs as a Leatherwood base hit got them in. Burford doubled to score Leatherwood.

Then Elko followed with what he may do best. He sent one out of the park, with a fairly strong wind blowing in, this time with three aboard. After the grand slam, Ole Miss led by 12 runs through five.

Gaddis pitched five innings before giving way to reliever Mason Nichols. Gaddis allowed two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Nichols then went two innings and allowed no runs, just as he has through four appearances this season.

In the seventh, Ben Van Cleve hit a ball toward third base, but an error on the ORU third baseman got two runs home for Ole Miss as T.J. McCants, who had walked, and Tywone Malone, who had singled, both scored.

The Rebels finished with 13 hits, the offense paced by Elko's three hits and seven RBIs. Ole Miss also got two hits each from Bench and Burford.

Josh Mallitz pitched the final two innings, facing six batters with three strikeouts.

The Rebels and Golden Eagles will reconvene Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will stream live on SEC Network + and the call can be heard via the Ole Miss Radio Network.
