Top 20 Finishes by Brown, Vongchaisit Help Late Rebel Push Up Team Leaderboard
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ole Miss men's golf squad was able to make a late push up the Louisiana Classics leaderboard on Tuesday, as the Rebels would wrap up their time at the Oakbourne Country Club by claiming fourth place, after logging a three-round team score of 851 (-13) on the week.
Ole Miss would finish the tournament second in the field in par-4 scoring (-3), while totaling the third-most birdies as a team with 56 over the team's three rounds. Three Rebels would also snag eagles on the week, with Kye Meeks, Brett Schell and Sarut Vongchaisit each sinking one over the course of the tournament.
"This was certainly not our best week," said head coach Chris Malloy. "However, we did a lot of really good things that we can build on for the remainder of the spring. It's as simple as eliminating three putts and having just a little more ball control. I look forward to getting back and preparing for The Hootie."
Evan Brown would end the tournament as the top individual finisher for the Rebels, as the graduate transfer fell just short of earning his first top 10 finish as a Rebel, finishing 12th overall. Brown's tournament would end with him logging a 210 (-6) on the week, finishing third in the field in par-4 scoring (-7) while sinking a grand total of 13 birdies and 34 pars.
Finishing just a stroke back from Brown in a tie for 13th was Vongchaisit, as the senior would blaze home a scorecard of 67 (-5) in his final round from Louisiana, earning five birdies and an eagle on Hole 11 to conclude his day. Vongchaisit would finish the tournament with a team-high 17 total birdies, ranking the third highest amongst all golfers in attendance.
Finishing just outside of the top 20 for the Rebels was Jack Gnam, as the senior battled his way to a 71 (-1) in his final round of play, finishing one-under on the week and in a tie for 24th. This marked Gnam's best finish of the season, as well as his highest individual finish since his 22nd place finish at the 2021 Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
Redshirt-freshman Meeks ended his week with a 72 (E) on Tuesday, finishing tied for 38th with a three-round total of 218 (+2). Meeks' 36 total pars on the week ranked as the most by any Rebel and fourth-most by any golfer in attendance.
Ending his tournament six-over with a three-round score of 222 was Schell, as he would close out his tournament with his second-consecutive round under par by shooting a 71 (-1) in Tuesday's final round. Schell would tie for 53rd to cap off his tournament, logging a total of seven birdies on the week.
Texas A&M would take home the Louisiana Classics team title on Tuesday, having finished with a three-round team score of 817 (-47) on the week.
Following a week-long break, the Rebels will return to action to compete in the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Charleston, South Carolina from March 27-29. Ole Miss has found recent success at the annual tournament held at Bulls Bay Golf Club, having won the team and individual titles at the event in 2018.
