Schell, Brown Galvanize Rebels Towards Early Success in South Carolina
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Ole Miss men's golf team got off to a red-hot start at the Hootie at Bulls Bay tournament held at Bull Bay Golf Club in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday with the Rebels firing off a 277 (-11) opening round as a team to sit in second heading into day two of competition.
The Rebels would end the opening round leading the field in par-3 scoring (-1), while also ranking second in par-4 scoring (E) as a team. Ole Miss would also rank first in total eagles on opening day from Bulls Bay, tallying a total of three with two coming from co-tournament leader Brett Schell on back-to-back holes.
"We got off to a great start before the wind really kicked up and we were able to hold on to finish the round," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We need to do a better job of taking advantage of some of these par 5s, and I'm confident that we will in the next two days. Brett and Evan really carried us today which was nice to see. We have done a very good job of not leaning on just one player this spring, and that's the sign of a good team."
Schell's opening round of play would consist of just two birdies, alongside back-to-back eagles on Holes 4 and 5 to give the sophomore a day one scorecard of 66 (-6), which was good enough for the sophomore to have a share of the individual lead at the conclusion of round one. Schell led all golfers in par-4 scoring (-3) on the day, while being one of just three golfers in attendance to bag two birdies in their opening round.
Just behind Schell with a scorecard of 67 (-5) for the Rebels was Evan Brown, as Brown bagged three birdies along with an eagle of his own on Hole 4 to sit tied for third overall, just one stroke back from the leaders. Brown currently sits below par in all three scoring categories, with Brown scoring at one-under on par-3s, one-under on par-4s and three-under on par-5s.
Schell and Brown's rounds would end with both golfers finishing par or better on all 18 of their holes, helping to propel the duo to the top of the Hootie leaderboard. Brown also ties his season-best round of 67, while Schell comes just short of matching his career-best round of 65.
Returning to the Rebel lineup after making his PGA TOUR debut just a week ago, Jackson Suber came out and logged a 70 (-2) in his first round back with Ole Miss, tallying four birdies to help the senior settle into a tie for 12th individually. Suber's strong opening round can be credited to his par-5 scoring, as the senior would finish three-under par in that category.
Rounding out the Rebel rotation on the day, both Sarut Vongchaisit and Kye Meeks logged scorecards of 74 (+2) to tie for 62rd overall. Jack Gnam, who is competing as an individual in Charleston, ended the day in a tie for 10th with a 69 (-3).
The Rebels sit just six strokes behind team leader South Carolina, with the Gamecocks logging a 271 (-17) on the day.
Tee times for the Rebels tomorrow are scheduled to run 9:39-10:15 a.m. CT, with the Rebels set to play 18 more holes from Bulls Bay Golf Club.
