Baseball Falls in Series Opener to No. 1 Tennessee, 12-1

3/25/2022 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. – A six-run second inning gave No. 1 Tennessee all the runs it needed in a 12-1 win against No. 1 Ole Miss Friday night in the Southeastern Conference home opener for the Rebels.

Tennessee (21-1, 4-0 SEC) starting pitcher Chase Burns had a dominant outing, while Ole Miss starter John Gaddis ran into some trouble early.

Gaddis, a senior left-hander, made it through an inning and a third before giving way to Dylan DeLucia. The junior right-hander pitched through the eighth inning for the Rebels. DeLucia had six strikeouts and gave up two walks.

Gaddis had recorded four strikeouts as the starter, but three walks and three hits were his undoing as Tennessee took advantage of basically every early opportunity. With the Vols already leading 1-0, a three-RBI triple from Cortland Lawson followed by a two-run homer from Jared Dickey made it 6-0.

That's when DeLucia entered the game and slowed the Tennessee offense down over the next several innings. Pitching the top of the ninth for Ole Miss was junior right-hander Matt Parenteau as the Volunteers got a solo home run from Blake Burke to close out the scoring.

Ole Miss didn't get its first hit in the game until Justin Bench singled to center field with one out in the fifth. Tim Elko's solo home run in the seventh was the Rebels' lone score in the contest. An eighth-inning single to left by Reagan Burford was Ole Miss' final hit of the game.

Ole Miss will look to respond on Saturday, taking on the Vols at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be aired nationally on the SEC Network, with the call being heard on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
