Lyndsey Reed Broke the Ole Miss Women’s Pole Vault
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's and women's track & field concluded their first home action of the season in superb fashion, winning 13 event titles on the final day of the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.
Eight of those 13 crowns came from the Rebel women's squad, and chief among them was yet another record-breaking performance from junior pole vaulter Lyndsey Reed. After a powerful indoor season that saw her break the school record at 4.41m/14-05.50 and ended with her earning Second-Team All-American status, Reed set right back to work in her first outdoor action of 2022. Reed soared over 4.36m/14-03.50 on her second attempt at the bar, surpassing Lindsey Murray's 2018 school record of 4.35m/14-03.25 set at the SEC Championships.
Furthermore, Reed has established herself as one of the early front-runners in the NCAA this season, currently ranking No. 2 in the nation and atop the SEC standings.
Sophomore Alex Brooks also had an excellent day in the invitational section of the women's pole vault, finishing runner-up to Reed at nearly a half-foot outdoor improvement to 4.08m/13-04.50. That puts her into a tie for sixth in the Ole Miss record books, as well as No. 12 in the NCAA, No. 6 in the East Region and No. 3 in the SEC this season.
All-American junior Jalani Davis notched her first win of the outdoor season with a strong performance in the women's shot put. Davis held a three-foot lead heading into the final round of throws, but she extended it to five feet on her sixth-attempt heave of 17.00m/55-09.25. At the moment, that throw puts her at No. 3 in the NCAA, No. 2 in the East and No. 1 in the SEC. Davis is the reigning SEC Indoor shot put champion, and is coming off an indoor national meet where she was the only thrower regardless of gender to double at the NCAA Championships.
Fellow junior Sara Van Aken tallied a big early-season win in the high jump. Van Aken sailed over 1.75m/5-08.75 on her second attempt at the height, which ties her overall PR and is an outdoor career-best that moves her to No. 8 in Ole Miss history. Currently, that bar puts Van Aken at No. 12 in the NCAA, No. 6 in the East and No. 2 in the SEC.
Other wins in the field for Ole Miss came courtesy of freshman Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley, who won the triple jump at 14.38m/47-02.25 (-1.0), and junior Daniel Viveros, who improved to 2-0 this outdoor season in the men's shot put at 18.62m/61-01.25.
Ole Miss had a fantastic day on the track as well, with eight more Rebel event wins coming on the oval. Five of those victories came from the Rebel sprinters, with the duo of Ariyonna Augustine and Kelly Rowe playing a role in three of those wins.
Both ran on the Rebel women's 4x100-meter relay alongside Jayda Eckford and Toni Glatz, which won at a season-best 44.69. Augustine was the victor in the women's 100-meter dash at a season-best 11.71 (-0.1), with Rowe right behind her as the runner-up, also at a season-best 11.78 (-0.1).
Rowe then went on to finish her day with her best work in the women's 200-meter dash. She won at an overall career-best 23.67 (+0.6), which makes her the No. 13 performer in Ole Miss history and puts her at No. 22 on the East Region list so far this season.
Over on the men's side, senior Elijah Dryer opened his final outdoor campaign with a blistering start in the 100-meter dash. Dryer won at a PR of 10.42 (-0.2), which moves him to No. 13 on the all-time Ole Miss performance list, as well as No. 18 in the East Region and No. 6 in the SEC as of Saturday.
Fellow senior Kenney Broadnax enjoyed his return to the outdoor version of the men's hurdles. Broadnax won the men's 110-meter hurdles despite running into a strong headwind at 14.07 (-1.4). Spencer Brown shined in his first home meet as a Rebel, finishing runner-up to Broadnax at 14.16 (-1.4) into that same headwind, making him the No. 8 performer in Ole Miss history.
Other Rebel victories on the track on Saturday came courtesy of the Ole Miss distance squad, with Morgan Claire Rose winning the women's 2000-meter steeplechase (6:45.79), Marcus Dropik winning the men's 800-meter (1:49.83, PR) and Cate Tracht winning the women's 1500-meter (4:32.11).
Ole Miss track & field will now take this coming week off to prepare for its second home meet of the season, the Joe Walker Invitational, on April 8-9.
