NCAA Indoor Champ Mario Garcia Romo Opens Outdoor with Blistering 800-Meter
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field honored 27 seniors in grand fashion in their final regular season home meet after several nationally prominent performances at the conclusion of the 2022 Joe Walker Invitational on Saturday.
NCAA Indoor mile champion and senior Mario Garcia Romo opened his outdoor season with a bombastic showing in the 800-meter. This was his first 800 in nearly a full calendar year, and he put the pedal down to win at a full second PR of 1:46.90 – the top time by a Spaniard in 2022. That time puts Garcia Romo as the No. 4 performer in Ole Miss history, as well as the best time run by a Rebel indoors since Craig Engels ran 1:46.03 at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. This season, Garcia Romo now ranks fourth in the NCAA and atop both the East Region and SEC leaderboards.
Fellow senior Baylor Franklin notched an impressive season open of his own in fourth place at 1:47.83, the ninth-best time in the NCAA in addition to the No. 4 time in the East and No. 3 in the SEC.
Senior Tedreauna Britt had an all-around great outing on Saturday, finishing third in both the women's shot put and discus thanks to two strong season-best performances. Britt's heave of 16.09m/52-09.50 in the shot put ranks her No. 13 in the East Region and No. 6 in the SEC, while her third-place mark of 52.79m/173-02 in the discus ranks eighth in the East and second in the conference. Junior Jalani Davis also notched an East Region top-15 performance in the discus, finishing fifth at a season-best 52.28m/171-06 – No. 12 in the East and No. 4 in the SEC.
Senior Kelly Rowe continued her torrid pace on the track, winning the 100-meter dash on Saturday at a sizeable career-best and wind-legal 11.52 (+0.9). With that performance, Rowe launched all the way from 15th to sixth in Ole Miss history, and this season she ranks No. 27 in the East and No. 11 in the SEC. Two weeks ago at the Ole Miss Classic, Rowe dropped another big PR in the 200-meter dash, winning at a wind-legal 23.67 (+0.6).
Sophomore Kyla McLaurin won the women's triple jump on Saturday at a half-foot PR of 12.26m/40-02.75 (+1.5), pushing her all the way to No. 9 on the all-time Ole Miss list.
Ole Miss also received wins from Kenney Broadnax in the men's 110-meter hurdles (13.96/-2.0; SB), Isaiah Weasby in the men's 400-meter dash (48.30), and the women's 4x100-meter relay of Olivia Womack, Ariyonna Augustine, Jayda Eckford and Kelly Rowe (44.93).
Saturday also saw the conclusion of the multi events, with Sara Van Aken notching a PR of 5,108 points to finish runner-up in the women's heptathlon (No. 8 Ole Miss history), and Pierce Genereux tallied a new career-best 6,060 points to finish third in the men's decathlon (No. 7 Ole Miss history).
Ole Miss track & field hits the road to Florida next week for the Tom Jones Memorial, hosted in Gainesville on April 15-16.
