Ole Miss 800-Meter Runners Shine at Conclusion to Tom Jones Memorial
4/16/2022 | Track and Field
Sintayehu Vissa Smashes 800-Meter Record with World’s Fourth-Best in 2022
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss track & field was paced by several sublime 800-meter performances to wrap up a successful weekend of competition at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial on Saturday.
The meet turned out as one of the best nationally this outdoor season, and the Rebels were part of the reason why after several impressive feats on Saturday. Chief among them was yet another assault on the Ole Miss record book by All-American junior Sintayehu Vissa. The reigning NCAA Indoor mile runner-up dismantled the school record in the 800-meter in her first try this season, dropping three seconds off her PR at an astounding 2:01.06 – the fourth-fastest time in the world this year.
Vissa was towards the back of the pack at the bell after coming through 400 in 59.8 seconds, but she unleashed a powerful charge down the final 200 to catch Florida's Imogen Barrett at the line by a half-second (2:01.65).
That 2:01.06 by Vissa outpaces Brooke Feldmeier's 2015 school record of 2:03.13 by more than two seconds, and it makes her the 13th-best Italian women's 800-meter runner ever outdoors. Her time is also is the third-fastest run by an Italian woman on American soil, the best since Gabriella Dorio clocked a 1:59.53 in the semifinal (Aug. 4) and 1:59.05 in the final (Aug. 6) to finish fourth at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
In addition to ranking fourth worldwide this season, Vissa's time ranks as the best by an Italian woman (indoors or outdoors), as well as No. 2 in the NCAA, East Region and SEC.
In the men's edition, All-American senior John Rivera Jr. answered the gauntlet thrown down by Vissa, dropping two seconds off his outdoor best at an overall career PR of 1:46.82 to finish third in a historically fast heat. Rivera's time launches him up to No. 3 in Ole Miss history, and he stands as the fastest Rebel 800-meter runner since Craig Engels clocked a 1:46.03 at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. This season, Rivera leads the United States and ranks 15th worldwide, and collegiately he ranks third in the NCAA and sits atop both the East Region and SEC leaderboards.
Fellow All-American senior Baylor Franklin also had a career day in the same heat, recording an overall career-best 1:47.41 in seventh place. That time improves on his slot at No. 8 in school history outdoors, and this year he ranks ninth in the United States, 13th in the NCAA, fifth in the East Region and fourth in the SEC.
Junior Jalani Davis continued to show her versatility as a thrower after a career day in the hammer throw. The reigning SEC Indoor shot put champion uncorked a one-foot hammer PR of 65.84m/216-00 to finish third overall on Saturday, improving on her spot as the No. 4 thrower on Ole Miss' incredible women's hammer list. This season, Davis now moves up to No. 16 in the United States, No. 17 in the NCAA, No. 6 in the East Region and No. 3 in the SEC.
NCAA weight throw runner-up Jasmine Mitchell recorded a season-best in fourth place at 63.80m/209-04, which moves her up to No. 24 in the NCAA, No. 10 in the East and No. 6 in the SEC this season.
The Ole Miss women's 4x100-meter relay had their best day of the season on Saturday as well, as the quartet of Olivia Womack, Ariyonna Augustine, Jayda Eckford and Kelly Rowe passed the stick around in a season-best 44.36 seconds – the ninth-best time in school history. Additionally, before removing team duplicates, that time puts Ole Miss No. 26 in the NCAA, No. 15 in the East Region and No. 8 in the SEC.
Sophomore Keirston Paige represented the Rebels on the track in the men's 110-meter hurdles final. In the prelim, Paige claimed the final time qualifier spot at a windy PR of 14.02 (+2.2) – the seventh-best time in school history and 30th-best in the East Region this year – before finishing eighth in the final at 14.27 (+0.6).
Ole Miss track & field will remain on the road next weekend, traveling to Alabama for the Crimson Tide Invite on April 22-23.
