Davis Becomes Third Rebel Women’s 58-Foot Shot Putter Outdoors

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Ole Miss track & field junior Jalani Davis' big day led the Rebels at the conclusion of Alabama's Crimson Tide Invite on Saturday.

Davis won the shot put at an overall career-best of 17.73m/58-2, which was nearly a full-foot outdoor improvement and the second 58-foot throw of her career after initially doing so on her SEC Indoor winning toss of 17.69m/58-0.5. Davis was in control for almost the entire competition, but she put it away in the fifth round on that big heave of 58-2, which wound up beating Olympian Portious Warren of Trinidad & Tobago by nearly 1.5 feet.

With her winning throw today, Davis becomes the third 58-footer in Ole Miss history outdoors behind Olympian Raven Saunders' 19.76m/64-10 from 2017 and All-American Janeah Stewart's 18.03m/59-2 from 2018. This season, Davis ranks No. 17 worldwide, No. 6 in the United States, No. 4 in the NCAA, No. 2 in the East Region and she leads all throwers in the SEC.

Davis is the reigning SEC Indoor shot put champion and was the runner-up outdoors in 2021. Last season, she was the lone thrower to triple at the outdoor national meet – male or female – and indoors this season she was again the only thrower of either gender to double in the shot put and weight throw.

Tedreauna Britt also tallied a top-three finish for the Rebel women in the discus in third place at 52.81m/173-03, as did Sara Van Aken in the women's high jump, also in third place at 1.71m/5-07.25.

Ole Miss also received two top-10 entries in the pole vault, with Elizabeth Nix clearing a quarter-inch PR at 3.92m/12-10.25 (No. 10 Ole Miss history) in the women's edition, and Ford Maberry clearing 4.90m/16-00.75 (tied for No. 10 Ole Miss history) on the men's side.

The Rebels will split once again next weekend, with the Ole Miss distance squad heading to Philadelphia in the hopes of bringing home a wheel at the 126th running of the Penn Relays on April 28-30, while the rest of the Rebel squad will head to Baton Rouge for the LSU Invitational on April 30.
