Track & Field’s Skylar Boogerd Breaks 5K Record at Virginia Challenge

4/22/2022 | Track and Field

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ole Miss track & field junior Skylar Boogerd became the first Rebel woman to ever break 16 minutes in the 5K – indoors or outdoors – following a record-breaking performance at the Virginia Challenge to kick off a split squad weekend for Ole Miss on Friday.

Boogerd – a native of Atoka, Tennessee – established herself as the best 5K runner in school history regardless of season after swiping her second school record of the year on Friday night at UVA. Indoors, Boogerd claimed the 5K record at 16:11.04 at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge on Feb. 11, but she put that time in the dust Friday with a whopping 17-second improvement to 15:54.46 to finish sixth amidst a stacked field in the invitational section.

That time takes down All-American Anna Elkin's 2021 outdoor record of 16:04.94 run nearly one year ago to the day at the Virginia Challenge, and it makes Boogerd the first Rebel woman to ever notch a sub-16 time through 5000-meters. Furthermore, it was a 28-second outdoor improvement over her previous best of 16:22.58 run at the 2021 Joe Walker Invitational.

This season, Boogerd's time from tonight currently ranks No. 24 in the NCAA, No. 12 in the East Region and No. 6 in the SEC. Elkin also ran a fast time on Friday, finishing 13th overall at 16:04.94, which ranks No. 31 in the East this season.

In the men's 5K invite, junior Cole Bullock had an almost equally large improvement, dropping 22 seconds off his outdoor PR and nine off his overall best to finish 10th overall on Friday at 13:39.46. That time by Bullock is the second-best ever run by a Rebel outdoors, only ranking behind All-American Ryan Walling's 2016 record of 13:31.30. This year, Bullock currently sits No. 39 in the NCAA, No. 16 in the East and No. 4 in the SEC.

Dereck Elkins also ran on Friday in the invitational section of the men's 5K, finishing 43rd at 14:08.24 – which makes him the No. 11 performer in school history.

Ole Miss also received a couple of solid 1500-meter races on the men's side, with Cade Bethmann finishing third overall in the open section at a season-best 3:42.27 (No. 30 East), and Shane Bracken taking 16th in the invitational edition at 3:43.19 – which ties for 10th all-time at Ole Miss and No. 40 on the East Region list this season.

Over at Alabama's Crimson Tide Invite, Ole Miss received a pair of notable performances in the women's hammer. Senior Deborah Bulai unleashed a big five-foot PR in the open section of the hammer, finishing as the runner-up at 60.53m/198-07. That toss moves her up to No. 6 in Ole Miss history, as well as No. 25 on the 2022 East Region list. Jalani Davis made the final in the invitational section, finishing sixth at 63.50m/208-04.

Competition resumes for Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa with the women's discus at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday.
