Rebels Dominate 4x800-Meter Relay for Second Penn Relays Title this Weekend
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Ole Miss men dominated the 4x800-meter relay to win their second Championship of America title at the conclusion of the 126th running of the historic Penn Relays, while the remainder of the Rebel track & field teams put in an impressive day of work down in Baton Rouge for the LSU Invitational on Saturday.
One day after an exciting last-second push to win the men's distance medley relay on Friday, the same Rebel foursome of Cade Bethmann, Baylor Franklin, John Rivera Jr. and Mario Garcia Romo went back out to the track and put on a clinic in front of a national television audience on ESPN2 in the College Men's 4x800-Meter Relay Championship of America.
Bethmann opened with a leg of 1:51.71, and by the time Franklin's spectacular career-best 1:46.76 second leg was over, the Rebels were in first with daylight to spare. Rivera cruised through his leg in 1:47.34, giving NCAA Indoor mile champion Mario Garcia Romo an unsurmountable lead for his 1:47.91 anchor leg to bring the Rebels through in 7:13.71 – four seconds ahead of runner-up Penn State (7:17.86).
That time fell within two seconds of the Penn Relays record of 7:11.17 set by Penn State in 1985, and it struck down the Ole Miss record of 7:22.29 set in 1991 by Patrick Davis, Thomas Johnson, George Kersh and Terrance Manogin. Furthermore, that time by the Rebel men today puts them No. 9 in NCAA history in the 4x800-meter relay outdoors with the 10th-fastest time.
The win is a historic one for Ole Miss, as it constitutes the first time the Rebels have won multiple relay wheels in a single trip. In total, it is the 10th overall Penn Relays title in school history, and the sixth in the prestigious Championship of America series alongside their DMR victory on Friday and previous wins by Ralph Spry in the long jump in 1983 (26-04.25), the men's sprint medley relay of Kevin Buffington, Michael Cox, Thomas Johnson and George Kersh in 1990 (3:14.98), Pablo Sierra in the 5K in 1991 (13:51.22), and the men's 4x400-meter relay of Alonzo Banks, Jimmy Love, Savante' Stringfellow and Wayne Woolery in 1999 (3:05.19).
Earlier, the Rebel women took third in a historically fast race in the College Women's 4x1500-Meter Relay Championship of America. The foursome of Skylar Boogerd (4:20), Anna Elkin (4:25), Loral Winn (4:18) and Sintayehu Vissa (4:15) finished in 17:24.46, which makes Ole Miss No. 14 in the event in NCAA history with the 20th-fastest time. The top-two finishers in the race – Arkansas (16:53.87) and NC State (16:55.19) – both dismantled the previous NCAA record of 17:08.34 set by Tennessee in 2009.
Down in Baton Rouge, the Rebels were led by several superb performances in the last regular season meet of the season – including a new school record in the men's shot put from Daniel Viveros. On his fourth attempt, Viveros uncorked an overall career-best 19.07m/62-06.75 to finish sixth and take down Brian Williams' 2018 outdoor Ole Miss record of 18.85m/61-10.25.
That toss makes Viveros the first 62-foot men's shot putter outdoors in Ole Miss history, and across both the indoor and outdoor seasons, it only trails Williams' 2018 indoor record of 19.24m/63-01.50 as the best throw ever by a Rebel. This season, Viveros now ranks No. 23 in the NCAA, No. 12 in the East Region and No. 6 in the SEC.
Elsewhere in the throws, reigning SEC discus champion and senior Tedreauna Britt took runner-up honors in the discus at a season-best 54.29m/178-01 (No. 30 NCAA, No. 13 East, No. 2 SEC), with Deborah Bulai setting a PR in sixth at 48.75m/159-11 to move to No. 9 in Ole Miss history.
Ole Miss received a top-notch performance in the women's 4x100-meter relay at LSU among a stacked field of teams. The Rebel quartet of Olivia Womack, Ariyonna Augustine, Jayda Eckford and Kelly Rowe passed the baton around in 43.81 to finish fourth overall – the third-best time ever run by an Ole Miss squad. The Rebels only finished behind the NCAA leader Texas (42.37), the NCAA No. 3 squad in LSU (42.85), and a national team relay from Canada (43.11). This season, the Rebels now rank No. 19 in the NCAA, No. 12 in the East, and No. 6 in the SEC, and when taking duplicates out of the national and regional lists, Ole Miss sits No. 12 in the NCAA and No. 8 in the East.
The Rebel women's sprinters weren't done there, however, with several posting impressive times across the 100 and 200-meter dashes. In the 200, school record holder Jayda Eckford dropped a sizeable season-best at a wind-legal 23.21 (+1.6) to finish 11th overall, which currently puts her No. 39 in the NCAA, No. 23 in the East Region, and No. 12 in the SEC. Kelly Rowe continued to snag PRs, tying her career-best in the 100-meter at a wind-legal 11.52 (+1.8) that stands No. 6 in school history, while also running a career-best 23.65 (-0.8) in the 200 that gives her sole possession of No. 15 in the Ole Miss record books.
In the men's 100-meter dash, All-American senior Elijah Dryer turned in a career day of his own, dropping more than a tenth off his PR to finish 13th overall at a slightly windy but NCAA allowable 10.31 (+2.1). That time moves him all the way from 13th into a tie for seventh all-time at Ole Miss with Olympic silver medalist Tony Dees, and Dryer also now stands as the fastest Rebel in the 100 since Jalen Miller ran 10.12 (+0.4) at the 2015 SEC Championships.
Ole Miss track & field now has a week off to prepare for its biggest home meet in nearly two decades when it hosts the 2022 SEC Outdoor Championships at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex from May 12-14.
