Late Rebels Push Falls One Stroke Short on Final Day in South Carolina
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Ole Miss men's golf team came up one stroke shy of claiming their second team tournament victory of the 2021-22 season at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday, with the Rebels' final team score of 845 (-19) falling short of tying ETSU, NC State, Missouri and South Carolina in first.
Despite the team's fifth place finish on the leaderboard, the Rebels still managed to log a tournament-high six eagles on the week, alongside a total of 46 birdies as a team over their three rounds of play in Charleston. The Rebels would also lead the field in par-3 scoring on day three at Bulls Bay, finishing at an even par in the category.
"We are obviously disappointed to come up one shot short of winning the tournament," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We preach all the time the importance of one shot and what it means over the course of three rounds. This is a hard way to learn that, but a great opportunity for us to learn from it and be better for it as we get to the postseason. There ate plenty of positives to build on from this week, we just need to clean up some silly mistakes. The good news is we have a quick turnaround before we head to our next event and I'm sure these guys will be eager to get this bad taste out of their mouths."
Helping to lead the late Rebel push towards the title was Jackson Suber, who was able to log his third-consecutive round at the Hootie below par, finishing his tournament with a 70 (-2) to finish tied for 11th at 211 (-5) on the week. The finish marks Suber's 22nd career top 20 finish and fourth of his 2021-22 season, ranking fourth amongst all golfers in attendance in par-3 scoring (-1) on the week.
Drawing level with Suber at five-under (211) on the week was Evan Brown, with Brown ending his tournament with back-to-back 72s (E) to tie his teammate for 11th overall. His 11th place finish matches an Ole Miss personal-best for Brown since transferring last summer, with Brown having also tied for 11th at the team's victory at the 2021 White Sands Bahamas Invitational last fall.
Also earning a top 20 finish for the Rebels was Sarut Vongchaisit, as a strong five-birdie round of 71 (-1) on Tuesday helped to push the Bangkok, Thailand, native up the leaderboard and into a tie for 18th. Vongchaisit, who finished the tournament with a total of nine birdies and two eagles, has now earned top 20 finishes in each of his last three tournament appearances for the Rebels beginning back with his 12th place finish at the Cabo Collegiate Invitational.
Brett Schell would end his tournament just outside of the top 20 for the Rebels, with the sophomore's three-day total of 214 (-2) giving him a share of 21st place when all was said and done. Schell's strong play in Charleston can be attributed to his par total, with the sophomore ranking second amongst all golfers in total pars with 40 on the week, with Schell also logging six birdies and a pair of eagles as well.
Redshirt-freshman Kye Meeks rounded out the Rebels lineup with a three-day total of 222 (+6) earning him a share of 68th. Senior Jack Gnam, who competed as an individual in the tournament, would finish tied for 40th at an even 216.
South Carolina and ETSU would end the day as co-tournament champions in Charleston, after both teams would play a total of three playoff holes alongside the likes of NC State and Missouri before agreeing to tie due to lack of light on the course.
The Rebels will now close out their regular season with a quick turnaround at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, North Carolina from April 2-3, before returning to West Point, Mississippi to take part in the Mossy Oak Invitational running April 11-12 at Mossy Oak Golf Club.
