Machalova and Leclercq-Ficher Earn Top-40 Individual Upsets

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 46 Ole Miss Women's Tennis (6-4, 0-2 SEC) suffered a 5-2 defeat to No. 23 Tennessee (8-2, 1-0 SEC) at the Barksdale Tennis Stadium on Sunday.

The Rebels were defeated in back-to-back road SEC matches over the weekend versus higher ranked opponents. Ole Miss falls to a 6-4 record through the first 10 duals of the 2022 season.

The Rebels and Volunteers competed in a tight opening doubles point. Tennessee's No. 8 ranked duo of Tenika McGiffin and Daria Kuczer defeated Sabina Machalova and Rachel Krzyzak, 6-1, to give the Volunteers a 1-0 lead. Lillian Gabrielsen and Ludmila Kareisová then leveled doubles by defeating Rebeka Mertena and Eleonora Molinaro, 6-3, on Court No. 3. Gabrielsen and Kareisová improved to 2-0 in SEC competition. The Rebels were in the driver's seat, leading 5-2 at No. 2 Doubles. Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher and Kelsey Mize were unable to hold onto their lead, falling in a tiebreak to Esther Adeshina and Elza Tomase. Tennessee took a 1-0 match lead.

The Volunteers had their way in singles, winning four of six individual matches. Tennessee won on Courts Nos. 3-6 to take a 5-0 lead and seal the win. Tennessee won in straight sets on Courts No. 3, 5 and 6 but Reka Zadori took Adeshina to three sets on Court No. 4.

Despite having lost the match, the Rebels earned two upset singles victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Machalova won first, defeating No. 39 McGiffin 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (a third set tiebreak was played in-lieu of a full set). Leclercq-Ficher then earned the highest-ranked victory of her career, taking down No. 30 Rebeka Mertena 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. The reigning SEC Freshman of the Week earned her 10th singles win of the year and improved to 4-2 in duals.

Up Next: The Rebels make their home SEC debut versus LSU next Friday, March 11. The Rebels then host No. 8 Texas A&M on Sunday.
