Softball Falls in Doubleheader At No. 8 Kentucky

4/10/2022 | Softball

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ole Miss softball fell to eighth-ranked Kentucky in both games of its doubleheader to close out the series Sunday afternoon at John Cropp Stadium.

The two teams met for a twin bill matchup after Saturday's contest was postponed. Ole Miss (29-11, 5-7 SEC) was unable to keep one of the nation's top hitting teams in Kentucky at bay.

GAME ONE | OLE MISS 2, KENTUCKY 6
A big fourth inning from Kentucky dug Ole Miss a six-run deficit as the Rebels dropped game one of the Sunday doubleheader, 6-2.

Ole Miss and Kentucky remained even through two innings. KK Esparza caught a runner stealing to end the first, and Savannah Diederich struck out a pair as part of a one-two-three second inning.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the third on two solo home runs. Paige Smith and the Rebels looked to respond in the top of the fourth after the junior led off the inning with a double. Abbey Latham followed with a five-pitch walk, and a batter later, Catelyn Riley singled up the middle, but Smith was thrown out trying to score from second.

Kentucky broke the game open in the fourth, adding four runs in the frame. Aynslie Furbush took over in the circle in the fifth and sixth innings, keeping the Wildcats off the board. The Rebels avoided the shutout in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on a pair of doubles from Riley and Keila Kamoku, but the late rally fell short.

GAME TWO | OLE MISS 2, KENTUCKY 8
In game two, Kentucky used a pair of three-run innings to take the series and sweep the doubleheader.

A leadoff double to start the game came around to score in the first inning, but Borgen stranded a runner to bring the Rebels back to the plate. Looking to respond, Latham led off the inning with a single, and Riley nearly sent one out of the ballpark, but it was tracked down at the wall.

UK scratched another run across in the second to go up 2-0, but Ole Miss answered in the third. Angelina DeLeon reached on a throwing error, and Ole Miss proceeded to load the bases with one out. Smith drove in the Rebels' first run to cut the deficit in half.

However, Kentucky proceeded to score three runs in both the bottom half of the third and fifth innings to take the momentum back. The Wildcats would go on to win 8-2.
