Sabina Machalova Earns Singles and Doubles Victories in Rebels Defeat
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 47 Ole Miss Women's Tennis (13-10, 5-8 SEC) fell 4-1 on the road at No. 36 Vanderbilt (15-8, 6-7 SEC) in the final match of the 2022 regular season on Sunday.
Ole Miss suffered a 4-1 road defeat on Sunday afternoon at No. 36 Vanderbilt. The Rebels next turn their attention to the SEC Championships, beginning Tuesday hosted by Florida in Gainesville.
The Rebels started the match with a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 1 Doubles. Sabina Machalova and Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher improved to 4-0 as a pair in SEC competition and put the Rebels ahead, 1-0, with the victory. The Commodores came back to win Court No. 2, 6-1, and No. 3, 6-4, to take doubles and go ahead 1-0 overall in the match.
Vanderbilt extended their lead to two, earning the first singles victory of the day at Court No. 4. Yufei Long defeated Rebel Freshman Rachel Krzyzak in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Krzyzak completes her first Ole Miss season 7-5 in SEC play.
Machalova then stayed in tremendous form, putting the Rebels on the board at No. 1 Singles. The No. 69 ranked Rebel defeated the Commodore's No. 69 ranked Anessa Lee in two sets, 7-5, 6-2. Machalova concludes the 2022 season with victories in three of her final four matches, vying for a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships for the second consecutive season.
Vanderbilt went on to win the next to singles matches to earn the victory. No. 86 Holly Staff won first, defeating No. 123 Leclercq-Ficher at Court No. 2. The Commodores clinched at No. 6 singles. Amy Stevens defeated Reka Zadori 6-3, 7-6 (4) to clinch the victory at 4-1.
Ole Miss led at No. 3 and No. 5 Singles at the time of defeat. Ludmila Kareisová was ahead 6-3, 6-6 over Marcella Cruz and Lillian Gabrielsen was up 3-2 in the third and final set versus Dasha Kourkina. The match was stopped early as the Rebels look ahead to postseason competition.
