Rebels Rally, Suffer Heartbreaking 7-6 Loss to Mississippi State

Ole Miss Drops the Rubber Match Saturday at Swayze

OXFORD, Miss. – Jacob Gonzalez gave Ole Miss new life with a ninth-inning big fly to tie the game and force free baseball at Swayze Field Saturday night but the Rebels couldn't finish off the comeback, falling 7-6 in extras.

Despite taking the loss, Brandon Johnson put up a valiant outting out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on one hit in 3.2 frames of relief, striking out seven. Jack Dougherty and Jackson Kimbrell also posted scoreless innings of relief.

For the third time in the series, Ole Miss (22-17, 6-12 SEC) took the lead in the first inning via a home run, going up 1-0 on Jacob Gonzalez's solo blast to right-center.

The score would hold there until the top of the third, when Mississippi State (24-17, 8-10 SEC) tied the game on a Logan Tanner RBI single.

With the score deadlocked at a run apiece, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 4-1 when Hunter Hines sent a three-run home run into the student section in right. The Rebels responded in the bottom half with a solo homer of their own, coming off the bat of Hayden Leatherwood.

RJ Yeager's two-run home run made it a brief four-run lead for MSU but Ole Miss again responded, scoring a pair to cancel out the runs through a TJ McCants bases-loaded walk and a Calvin Harris pinch hit sacrifice fly.

Down to its final three outs, Ole Miss rallied in the ninth. Justin Bench laced a one-out single through the left side and Jacob Gonzalez brought the libations into the air and the Swayze faithful to their feet, crushing a game-tying bomb over the right field fence to force extras.

However, Mississippi State would have the last say as Brad Cumbest hit a solo home run to left field in the 11th and the Rebels went down in order.

The Rebels and Bulldogs will meet for a fourth-straight game on Tuesday, facing off for the Governor's Cup at 6 p.m. CT at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi. The call of the game can be heard through the Ole Miss Radio Network.
