Rebels Win Match No. 10 of 2022 Dual Season
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 45 Ole Miss Women's Tennis (10-8, 4-6 SEC) won 6-1 versus Missouri (6-17, 1-9 SEC) at the William F. Galtney Tennis Center on Friday. The match was moved indoors due to weather.
Ole Miss won its second-straight match on Friday, taking down the Mizzou Tigers 6-1 at home. The Rebels have defeated the Tigers in five straight matches over the last six seasons dating back to 2017.
Mizzou got the best of the Rebels, 2-1, in a competitive doubles portion of the match. Ole Miss took the early lead, 1-0, behind No. 1 Doubles team Sabina Machalova and Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher. Machalova and Leclercq-Ficher defeated Mizzou's Bronte Murgett and Gabriela Martinez 6-1. Ole Miss trailed Mizzou at No. 2 and No. 3 Doubles 5-3 in both matches and broke to lessen the margin to 5-4. The comeback effort was not enough for the Rebels as the Tigers took Court No. 3, 6-4, followed by Court No. 2, 7-5, to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 opening match lead.
The Rebels turned things around quickly in singles, capturing all first sets across the board. ITA No. 49 Machalova stayed sharp in both facets of the match on Friday, winning first for Ole Miss. The Senior captain defeated Murgett in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to tie the match 1-1. Machalova improved to 19-11 in singles (9-6 in duals) this season.
Freshman Ludmila Kareisová next defeated Elys Ventura in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Rebels their first lead of the evening, 2-1. She improved to 7-7 overall in dual play this season. Lillian Gabrielsen extended the lead to 3-0 by defeating the Tigers' Martinez 7-5, 6-0, at No. 6 Singles. Gabrielsen has earned three straight singles victories for the Rebels. Elysia Pool clinched the victory seconds later, winning 6-1, 6-3 versus Romary Cardenas at No. 6 Singles. The Rebels sealed the win at 4-1. Mizzou and Ole Miss played out the final two remaining matches.
Rachel Krzyzak extended the Ole Miss lead to 5-1, defeating Emelie Schwarte 6-4, 7-6 (3). Leclerc-Ficher came from behind, down 5-1 in the second set, to defeat Missouri's Ellie Wright in two close sets 7-6 (6), 6-5. The Rebels won by a total margin of five decision points, 6-1.
Up Next: The Rebels will play at home again on Sunday versus No. 35 Arkansas for Senior Day. The final home contest of the 2022 season is scheduled to be played outdoors at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
