Ole Miss Women Punch Two More Tickets on Final Day of NCAA East Regional

5/28/2022 | Track and Field

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ole Miss women's track & field scored two more national berths to conclude a successful four-day stint for the Rebels at Indiana University for the 2022 NCAA East Region Preliminary Round Championships on Saturday.

Both Rebel tickets to Eugene came back-to-back on the track courtesy of the women's 4x100-meter relay, and then an individual berth from SEC champ Sintayehu Vissa in the 1500-meter quarterfinal. Ole Miss leaves Bloomington with nine tickets to Oregon for 11 total athletes – five berths by the Rebel women and four from the men.

Under seventh-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, Ole Miss has averaged 10.7 entries from 12.2 athletes each season across men's and women's competition outdoors. In her tenure across both the indoor and outdoor NCAA meets, the Rebels have collected nine NCAA top-25 team finishes (three in the top-10), nine NCAA individual champions, seven NCAA runners-up, 122 First or Second-Team All-Americans and 210 NCAA points, while setting program records in women's indoor (T-6th, 2022) and the second-best finish ever in men's indoor (10th, 2x).

"All in all, this was a very good meet for us," Price-Smith said. "I am extremely proud of all of our athletes and the way they competed. This is a really tough meet, and although we came up short in a few areas, it wasn't from a lack of effort. Congratulations to our 11 athletes that will compete in the NCAA Championship meet in Eugene."

The Ole Miss women's quartet of Olivia Womack, Ariyonna Augustine, Jayda Eckford and Kelly Rowe took care of business in the 4x100-meter relay on Saturday, notching the seventh consecutive national berth in the event by Ole Miss dating back to 2015. Anchor Kelly Rowe brought the Rebels across the line in 43.85, good for third in Heat Two and an automatic qualifier spot to Oregon for the national meet. Three of the four hold national experience in the 4x100-meter relay, with this being Augustine's first career NCAA ticket.

Vissa, meanwhile, was equally business-like in the 1500-meter quarterfinal that directly followed the relay. The reigning NCAA Indoor mile runner-up won the first heat at 4:11.92, which was one of five times that broke the previous facility record of 4:12.67 set just two nights ago by Alabama's Flomena Asekol.

Vissa is the first Rebel woman to ever qualify in the 1500-meter, and this also stands as her first career NCAA Outdoor berth. This is just the latest in a long line of historical achievements for the All-American Vissa, who completed the SEC indoor/outdoor sweep in the mile and 1500 – both firsts in program history – while also leading the Rebel women to their first SEC distance medley relay title as the anchor.

Competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships runs June 8-11 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. The meet will be televised and streamed live online via the ESPN family of networks.
