MADISON, Wis. – Ole Miss men's and women's cross country faces its toughest test of the 2023 season against a stacked field at Wisconsin's Nuttycombe Invitational, which is set for the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Friday.
Ole Miss will face a gauntlet of 55 total ranked schools in competition on Friday, with almost an even split of 22 on the women's side and 23 on the men's. The No. 22 Rebel women will be among those ranked schools in the championship 6K race, while the Rebel men will be among 11 total teams in Madison also receiving votes in the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.
The Rebels return to competition after a solid showing at Loyola's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational two weeks ago in Chicago, where the Ole Miss women finished runners-up to now No. 18 Furman, while a shorthanded Rebel men's team finished fifth overall after another strong fifth-place performance from junior and Wisconsin transfer, Jack Meijer.
The No. 22 Ole Miss women are looking to make some noise after a great team effort at Loyola that yielded a scoring spread of just 34 seconds. Leading that charge was a powerful one-two punch of seniors Loral Winn and Ryann Helmers, who are both in competition again this week. Winn led the way in third place at a 6K PR of 19:53.0, her second career sub-20 6K, while Helmers followed right behind in fourth at 19:55.7 – her third career race below the 20-minute barrier.
Also running this weekend for the Rebels are senior Skylar Boogerd and sophomore Sarah Schiffmann, who have joined Winn and Helmers in the scoring contingent in each of the last two meets. Other Ole Miss women running are junior Madison Hulsey, junior Hannah Ielfield, senior Jocelyn Long and senior Kristel van den Berg.
The Ole Miss men, meanwhile, will have a familiar tour guide in junior Jack Meijer, who ran three seasons at Wisconsin and was an NCAA All-Great Lakes honoree for the Badgers last season. Meijer has been the top finisher for the Rebel men in each of his two meets so far, finishing fifth at both the Southern Showcase on Sept. 15, as well as at Loyola two weeks ago.
The Rebels will also be looking for another good race out of sophomore Toby Gillen, who has finished in the top-10 in each of his two races as well. Returning back to the starting line this week is senior Cruz Gomez, who finished eighth at the Southern Showcase before scratching out at Loyola.
Other Rebel men running at Wisconsin are Aiden Britt, Chase Rose and Gabe Scales.
Competition will begin at 11 a.m. CT with the women's championship 6K race, followed by the men's championship 8K at 11:40 a.m. CT. Fans can watch the action live on RunnerSpace (subscription required).
