Rebels Fall in Five-Set Battle
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Battling for five sets, Ole Miss volleyball came up short against Missouri. The Rebels fell 3-2 in a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon inside the Hearnes Center.
Four Rebels finished in double figures, but Ole Miss couldn't find a way to stop Missouri's Janet Demarrais, who tallied 30 kills in the match. Missouri native Anna Bair led the way for Ole Miss with 13 kills, followed by a trio with 10. Middle blocker Sasha Ratliff tallied her 800th career kill in the match, finishing with six kills. The Rebels were electric at the service line, finishing with a season-high 12 aces, including three each from Vivian Miller and Cammy Niesen.
Both teams played an evenly matched first set. Tied at 15 coming out of the media break, Ole Miss rattled off a 3-0 run to gain separation and took advantage of two Mizzou errors to make it 20-16. The Tigers, however, didn't shy away. Missouri climbed back within one and fended off a set point before rallying to take the first, 26-24.
Feeling snubbed after the opening set, Ole Miss responded to even the match. An early ace by Shayla Meyer set the tone, as the Rebels quickly opened up a 10-4 lead on the Tigers. The Ole Miss continued to add to its lead, doubling up the Tigers at 16-8 and taking its largest lead of the match at 20-11 after an ace from Miller. Missouri tried to climb back, but the Rebels rolled to a 25-18 set victory.
Ole Miss continued to dominate Missouri in the third set, building up a 15-11 advantage at the media timeout. Bair extended the lead to six with back-to-back kills and forced the Tigers to call a timeout late in the set. Missouri made things interesting, stringing together a 4-0 run to pull within one of Ole Miss, but Meyer and Miller slammed the door with three straight kills to put the Rebels up two sets to one.
Missouri jumped out to a 5-2 lead to start the fourth, but the Rebels quickly responded to tie the match up at five. The two teams continued to go back and forth as the Tigers fought to stay alive. Trailing by two, Ole Miss strung together a 4-0 run capped off by a massive solo block by Ratliff. The Tigers, however, wouldn't go away easily, fighting back to take a 20-17 lead. After a timeout by head coach Bre Henry, the Rebels battled to tie things up at 22 but ran out of steam as Missouri forced a fifth set.
Missouri used the energy from the home crowd to complete the comeback, topping Ole Miss 15-6 in the final set.
The Rebels look to snap a five-match skid on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT at Georgia.
