McCants Blasts Two Home Runs and Makes Diving Grab In Victory
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss scored eight runs in the first two innings and continued to roll offensively as the Rebels (12-2) beat Purdue (8-5) 15-7 Friday night in the series opener at Swayze Field.
The Rebels posted four runs in each of the first two innings. Kemp Alderman, with a career record-tying five RBI, and Anthony Calarco, who was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, were joined by TJ McCants, Peyton Chatagnier, and Will Furniss as the most productive offensively.
Alderman went 2-for-4 with a home run, along with those five RBI and also two runs scored. McCants had two home runs and was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Chatagnier was 2-for-5 with a RBI, while Furniss was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
After Ole Miss starter Jack Dougherty had a quick top of the first inning, the Rebels unleashed their offense. Alderman drove in Jacob Gonzalez with a single after the Rebel shortstop led off the game with a hit by pitch from Boilermaker starter Khal Stephen. Calarco then singled to score Ethan Groff who had walked. Back-to-back singles by Chatagnier and Furniss scored Alderman and Calarco.
In the second, after another three up, three down for Dougherty, the Rebels went back to work for more runs. Gonzalez and Calvin Harris walked, then Alderman sent one out of the park to left and into the terrace seats for a 7-0 UM lead. Later in the inning, Calarco scored on a base hit by Furniss after the Rebel first baseman reached on a base hit to left.
After the initial Purdue baserunner reached on a walk but failed to score in the top of the third, Ole Miss added another run in the bottom of the third on an Alderman fly ball to center field that scored Groff who had gotten on base via a walk.
Down 9-0 in the fourth inning, the Boilermakers scored three runs to trim the Rebel lead to just six. Jake Jarvis launched a three-run homer into the right field bullpen after back-to-back singles by Paul Toetz and CJ Valdez.
But the visitors weren't done. Two innings later, still down 9-3, Purdue added three more runs in the top of the sixth. Valdez doubled to score Toetz who had also doubled. Jo Stevens singled to score Valdez. A wild pitch by Rebel freshman reliever Brayden Jones got Cam Thompson home from third after he had been hit by a Rebel starter Dougherty pitch to get on base.
It was 9-6 Ole Miss in the bottom of the sixth when McCants launched one out of Swayze to right field for a 10-6 lead. But Purdue answered in the seventh with a two-out home run by Valdez to left.
Mitch Murrell came in for Jones to get the last out of the inning. With the score 10-7 Rebels at stretch time, a winner in this game was still hanging in the balance. But not for long.
Ole Miss picked up five runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull away. A Harris RBI single and a two-RBI double for Calarco made it 13-7. A two-run homer to right by McCants, his second round-tripper of the night, gave the Rebels a 15-7 lead through seven complete.
Murrell kept the Boilers at bay in the eighth. Rebel freshman Mason Morris came in to finish things up on the mound for the Rebels in the ninth, allowing a one-out hit batsman but nothing else. And this one was in the books in favor of the Rebels.
Dougherty (2-1) got the win, while Stephen (1-1) got the loss.
The two teams meet at noon Saturday in game two of the three-game series.
