Rebels Look to Bounce Back Saturday
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Unable to get anything going offensively, Ole Miss softball fell to No. 4 Tennessee 6-0 Friday evening at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Rebels (13-9, 0-1 SEC) reached base four times but failed to record a hit in the contest. They only allowed three to Tennessee (18-1, 1-0 SEC); however, the Lady Vols made them count, sending them all out of the ballpark.
Brooke Vestal was dealing out of the gate. The senior used a four-pitch first inning and snared a line drive to turn an inning-ending double play in the second to get through two unscathed.
Ole Miss had a chance to score in the third after Lexie Brady walked and moved to third on a wild pitch and a flyout but couldn't cash in.
Three walks in the bottom of the third loaded the bases for the Lady Vols with one out, forcing Ole Miss to turn things over to Aynslie Furbush in the circle. Tennessee took advantage of the situation as Kiki Malloy hit a grand slam to make it 4-0. Ole Miss turned to Makenna Kliethermes, who got the Rebels out of the inning with no further damage done.
Tennessee continued to add to its lead in the fourth and fifth inning with a pair of solo home runs and keep the Rebels off the board.
With weather expected for Sunday, Ole Miss and Tennessee will now wrap up the series Saturday with a doubleheader at 12:30 and 3 p.m. CT.
