ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Ole Miss track & field will have 10 entries on the biggest stage of the collegiate indoor season at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held this weekend at the Albuquerque Convention Center on March 10-11.

To qualify for the national meet, student-athletes needed to finish within the top-16 of their individual events or top-12 as a relay by the end of the regular season. Those 16 in each event will be competing not only for team or individual national championships, but also to grasp one of the coveted top-eight scoring spots for First-Team All-American status. Places nine-through-16 receive Second-Team distinction.

Ole Miss is ranked within the national top-25 in both women's and men's competition entering this weekend, with the Rebel women at a season-high No. 9 and the men No. 24 in the Week Seven USTFCCCA National Rating Index released on Monday.

Representing Ole Miss in Albuquerque this weekend will be: both Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell in the women's shot put and weight throw, McKenzie Long in the women's 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, Baylor Franklin in the men's 800-meter, Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan in the men's shot put and weight throw, and the men's distance medley relay consisting of Franklin, Shane Bracken, Anthony Camerieri, Tiarnan Crorken, Cade Flatt and Jacob Lough.

ESPN+ will carry the action both days across both men's and women's sessions, while ESPNU will air a combined tape delay re-airing on both Sunday and Monday evening.

MEET NOTES

• On the track under eighth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith, the Rebels have collected 10 NCAA top-25 team finishes, 10 NCAA individual champions, eight NCAA runners-up, 130 First or Second-Team All-Americans, 231 NCAA points, 64 SEC individual champions and a bevy of the best team finishes in program history at both the SEC and NCAA levels.

• Three of the six all-time NCAA top-10 track finishes in Ole Miss history have come within the last two years: 2022 women's indoor (T-6th), 2022 men's indoor (T-10th), 2021 men's indoor (10th), 2013 men's outdoor (8th), 2001 men's indoor (10th) and 1991 men's indoor (9th).

• The Ole Miss women finished tied for sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2022, the best national team finish in the combined history of the program -- indoors or outdoors.

• The Rebel men have finished at 10th (2021) and tied for 10th (2022) each of the last two seasons, the first back-to-back national top-10 finishes in men's or women's program history regardless of season.

• Last year, Ole Miss was one of just four teams nationally to place both men and women within the top-10 at the indoor national meet (alongside Arkansas, Texas and Texas A&M).

• In its history indoors, Ole Miss has finished in the NCAA top-25 of the team standings 19 total times (13 times on the men's side, six times on the women's side).

• Ole Miss owns 136 First or Second-Team All-Americans indoors (87 men, 49 women), as well as 10 NCAA titles (13 total NCAA Champions; 10 men, three women). Of those 136, a total of 74 All-Americans (45 men, 29 women) have come under Price-Smith, as well as four NCAA titles (Raven Saunders, shot put, 2017; men's DMR, 2017; Shey Taiwo, weight throw, 2022; Mario Garcia Romo, mile, 2022).

• The Ole Miss women are coming off a record tie for fourth place at the SEC Indoor Championships, where they received medal performances from Jalani Davis in both the weight throw (gold) and shot put (silver), McKenzie Long in the 200-meter dash (silver) and Jasmine Mitchell in the weight throw (silver). That tie for fourth place ranks as the best at an SEC meet -- indoors or outdoors -- in Ole Miss women's history.

WOMEN'S NOTES

• The No. 9 Ole Miss women hold their top-10 team ranking from just three women who are all doubling at NCAAs this week: both Jalani Davis and Jasmine Mitchell in the women's shot put and weight throw, and McKenzie Long in the women's 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.

• Davis and Mitchell -- the only throwers in the NCAA this year both beyond 17 meters in the shot put and 24 meters in the weight throw -- are also the only two women attempting the shot put/weight throw double at the national meet. Combined with the men, they are among just five throwers doubling this season.

• Davis is no stranger to doubling -- or even tripling -- at the national meet. This is the second straight NCAA Indoor double for Davis, who also tripled at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Davis is an eight-time NCAA qualifier and three-time All-American.

• For Mitchell, this is her fourth trip to nationals in the weight throw in as many career opportunities. She has finished no worse than fourth in her three competitions, with her first national ticket in 2020 coming the same season that the NCAA Championships were canceled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

• Davis enters nationals after one of the best throwing weekends in the history of the sport globally on the women's side. Davis won the SEC title at a one-foot PR and meet record 24.63m/80-09.75, improving upon her NCAA lead she has held since Jan. 13. She then finished second in the shot put at a two-foot best of 18.43m/60-05.75, making her the first woman in world history to break both 80 feet in the weight throw and 60 feet in the shot put indoors.

• With her new combined total of 43.06 meters across both events, Davis is now the best collegian ever combined -- as well as No. 4 in world history. Mitchell ranks second in collegiate history behind Davis and No. 7 in world history.

*** World record

• Davis' weight throw improvement moved her from No. 8 to No. 5 on the all-time collegiate top-10 list, on which Ole Miss now possesses four spots. Davis' mark was also the ninth best in collegiate history and was one of two 80-foot throws in her SEC series, making her one of just three collegians ever with multiple 80-foot throws in the same series alongside SIU's Brittany Riley (2007) and teammate Shey Taiwo, who did so last season in 2022.

• Davis' improvement in the shot put moved her to No. 15 in collegiate history, and No. 2 in Ole Miss history behind Olympian Raven Saunders' 2017 mark of 19.56m/64-02.25 that stood as the collegiate record until earlier this season.

• Mitchell was the NCAA runner-up in 2022 to Taiwo at 24.94m/81-10, the No. 3 mark in collegiate history and No. 8 in world history.

• When accounting for Mitchell's two-foot shot put PR of 17.42m/57-2 earlier this season, both she and Davis remain as two of just seven throwers in world history to break 79 feet in the weight and 57 feet in the shot put indoors:

7 Candice Scott (TTO) 17.65m/57-11 24.17m/79-03.75 41.82m

• In the collegiate all-time top-10, Ole Miss owns four entries in the all-time top-10 who are all beyond 79 feet: 2022 NCAA Champion Shey Taiwo (second, 25.55m/83-10; 2022), Mitchell (third, 24.94m/81-10; 2022), Davis (fifth, 24.63m/80-09.75; 2023) and Janeah Stewart (24.12m/79-01.75; 2018).

• In addition to owning 40 percent of the all-time collegiate top-10, Ole Miss has 55 of the 143 total 23-meter throws in collegiate history (38.5 percent). Of those 143, NCAA champ Shey Taiwo collected 21 in her Rebel career (15.8 percent) and Janeah Stewart owns nine, while current Rebels Jasmine Mitchell (15) and Jalani Davis (10) combine for 25 career 23-meter tosses. At the 24-meter plateau, Ole Miss has 16 of 38 total in NCAA history (42.1 percent) -- with Taiwo owning nine such throws by herself (23.7 percent), in addition to four of the top-11 tosses and three of the six 25-meter throws all-time. At four 24-meter throwers all-time, Ole Miss stands as the lone school in the nation to have more than two beyond the 24-meter mark.

• Senior transfer McKenzie Long put together the best meet of her career at the SEC Championships two weeks ago, punching her ticket to nationals in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash following superb performances.

• Long was the SEC silver medalist in the 200-meter dash at a mammoth career best and Ole Miss record 22.67 -- obliterating her old school record of 23.00 that barely stood 24 hours from when it was run in the prelim. Long enters nationals with the No. 3 seed time in the 200.

• Long earned her ticket in the 60-meter dash at her SEC prelim time of 7.22, the second-fastest in Ole Miss history. It originally ranked right outside the qualifying cutoff in 18th, but after two scratches was the final performance allowed in to NCAAs.

• These are the first two career national tickets for Long, who transferred to Ole Miss from NC State this season. Long is the first Rebel to double in the 60-meter and 200-meter indoors since 2001, and her progression in the last month has been spectacular:

Long's 60m Progression (PR Entering: 7.39)
Date Meet (Round) Time
Jan. 28 Razorback Invitational (Prelim) 7.27
Jan. 28 Razorback Invitational (Final) 7.28
Feb. 10 Tyson Invitational (Prelim) 7.27
Feb. 10 Tyson Invitational (Final) 7.32
Feb. 24 SEC Championships (Prelim) 7.22
Feb. 25 SEC Championships (Final) 7.33

Long's 200m Progression (PR Entering: 23.99)
Date Meet (Round) Time
Feb. 11 Tyson Invitational 23.29
Feb. 24 SEC Championships (Prelim) 23.00
Feb. 25 SEC Championships (Prelim) 22.67

• Long opened her Rebel career by etching her name into the Ole Miss record books, breaking the long-standing women's school record in the 300-meter dash at Vanderbilt on Jan. 13. Long won at 37.38 to break Sonya Varnell's 1987 record of 37.58, which was a conversion of her 37.8 in the 300-yard dash.

MEN'S NOTES

• Freshman Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan has quickly cemented himself as one of the most prolific freshman throwers in NCAA history, making short work of the Ole Miss record book and launching himself into the national conversation just a few meets into his collegiate career.

• Robinson-O'Hagan punched tickets to NCAAs with both of his school records in the weight throw at 23.62m/77-6 (No. 3 NCAA) and shot put at 19.73m/64-08.75 (No. 13 NCAA).

• Robinson-O'Hagan was the SEC runner-up in the weight throw at that latest mark, which registered as the all-time collegiate freshman record. He is one of just three collegiate throwers to ever break 23 meters in the men's weight throw, and he owns three of the six 23-meter tosses by freshmen all-time.

All-Time Top Collegiate Freshmen, Weight Throw
Rk Name (School) Mark Year
1 Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan (Ole Miss) 23.62m/77-6 2023
2 Gleb Dudarev (Kansas) 23.44m/76-11 2017
3 Conor McCullough (Princeton) 23.19m/76-1 2012
4 Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan (Ole Miss) 23.14m/75-11 2023
5 Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan (Ole Miss) 23.05m/75-07.50 2023
6 Gleb Dudarev (Kansas) 23.00m/75-05.50 2017

• At those distances, Robinson-O'Hagan is currently the only thrower in the world at 75 feet in the weight throw and 64 feet in the shot put. Furthermore, he is the only collegiate freshman ever at 77 feet in the weight and 64 in the shot put, as well as one of just five collegians ever at those marks.

• Historically, his prowess in both events stacks up among the best in collegiate history. Just four meets into his Rebel career, Robinson-O'Hagan's combined shot/weight distance of 43.35m ranks No. 7 in collegiate history and is the lone freshman in the top-10.

• Among freshmen this season, Robinson-O'Hagan leads the weight throw by more than five feet over UCLA's Michael Pinckney (22.05m/72-04.25), and by more than 3.5 feet in the shot put over Oklahoma's Tucker Smith (18.62m/61-01.25).

• Robinson-O'Hagan is the first 64-foot men's shot putter in Ole Miss history, indoors or outdoors, and only the third collegiate freshman to break 64 feet since 2020 alongside Wisconsin's Andrew Stone (19.82m/65-00.50) and Illinois' Tyler Sudduth (19.59m/64-03.25) -- both from 2022.

• His latest shot put PR ranks as the eighth-best throw by a freshman since 2018 and was the seventh-best that early into a freshman season in the same timespan. Since 2018, only Arizona's Jordan Geist (21.45m/70-04.50; 2018), Texas' Tripp Pipperi (19.83m/65-00.75; 2018) and Wisconsin's Andrew Stone (19.82m/65-00.50; 2022) rank ahead of Robinson-O'Hagan as freshman shot putters.

• Ole Miss ran its second-fastest DMR ever at Notre Dame on Feb. 18, with the quartet of Baylor Franklin (1200m; 2:51), Cade Flatt (400m; 0:47), Tiarnan Crorken (800m; 1:46) and Anthony Camerieri (mile; 3:54) clocking in at 9:21.89 to punch their ticket to NCAAs for the seventh time in eight years.

• Franklin also punched his second career NCAA Indoor ticket in the 800-meter, entering seeded No. 7 at his indoor PR of 1:46.74. For Franklin, that time was his season-opener and moved him up to No. 2 in Ole Miss history, trailing only national champion George Kersh's 1:46.19 from the 1991 NCAA Indoor Championships.

• Franklin capped off the 2022 outdoor season with a spectacular fifth-place finish in the U.S. men's 800-meter final, where he ran a career-best 1:45.65 and split 52.90 over his final 400 to claw his way from the back of the pack at the bell.
