Long Wows Again as Track & Field Closes Stay at Texas Relays

4/1/2023 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas – Ole Miss track & field senior McKenzie Long continued to establish herself as a world-class sprinter, beating out a field of professionals after another terrific 100-meter performance to close out the Rebels' stay at the Texas Relays on Saturday.

Just 24 hours earlier, Long set the track world ablaze after a stunning 10.80 (+3.5) in the prelim round – an all-conditions world lead for 2023 and tied for the fifth-best time in collegiate history in all conditions. And despite having run on two 4x100-meter relay legs across the same timespan, Long put on a show yet again Saturday, winning the Relays title in the University Women's 100-meter dash at a wind-legal and U.S. leading 11.00 (+0.2) to firmly put herself at the top of the national leaderboard.

Immediately following her race was an invitational section of the 100-meter dash filled with professionals and Olympians, and when the times flashed on the screen, Long's two-day performance became even more impressive as her 11.00 beat out the heat winner – Olympian Gabby Thomas – by nine hundredths of a second.

"I just keep telling myself that I belong here and just perform," Long told reporters afterward. "I don't want any kind of pressure on myself, I just want to do what I do best and showcase to the world who I am."

Long's time puts her atop both the U.S. and NCAA descending lists, as well as ranking her No. 3 in the world so far this outdoor season. It also stands as a new wind-legal PR (besting her previous of 11.49) and a new wind-legal school record to go along with her windy 10.80 from yesterday.

Long's win is just one of nine total in Ole Miss history at the Texas Relays in the countable events, and just the second ever by a Rebel woman alongside Haley Cutright's 2013 win in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Other past winners were the Rebel men's 2014 distance medley relay, Ricky Robertson in the high jump in 2014, Olympian Sam Kendricks in the pole vault in both 2013 and 2014 (invite), Olympian Antwon Hicks in the 110-meter hurdles in 2003, and Olympian Savante' Stringfellow in the long jump in both 2000 and 2001.

The rapid rise for Long, who came to Ole Miss from NC State this past fall, has quickly become one of the top storylines of the track season nationally. Indoors, Long wowed with massive improvements in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, culminating with an SEC silver in the 200 and First-Team All-America finishes in both events. Long already owns four Ole Miss records in less than three months in a Rebel uniform, and has still yet to run a 200-meter outdoors this season.

"From my indoor season to my outdoor season, I was completely nervous," Long said. "I had a lot of pressure on myself because I did such a good job indoors, so I want to keep that momentum going and (today's win) is pretty big."

Long ran the second leg on the aforementioned Ole Miss women's 4x100-meter relay in Saturday's University/College final. The Rebel quartet of Jaiden Paris, Long, Jayda Eckford and Ariyonna Augustine passed the stick in a season-best 43.84 to finish fifth in a stacked final, which ties for the sixth-best time in school history and puts Ole Miss at No. 5 in the NCAA this season.

Senior Tedreauna Britt nabbed a win in Section B of the women's discus, topping out at 53.05m/174-00. Jalani Davis made the final as well at a season-best 50.99m/167-03. In Section A of the women's shot put, senior Jasmine Mitchell was the top finisher for Ole Miss, making the final at an outdoor season-best 16.51m/54-2.

Ole Miss now returns home to host the 2023 Joe Walker Invite, set for April 7-8 at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
