AUSTIN, Texas / STANFORD, Calif. – Ole Miss track & field will split squad this weekend for two of the biggest meets of the outdoor season, with the Rebel long distance runners heading west for the Stanford Invitational (March 31), while a large portion of the remainder of the roster heads to the Lone Star State for the 95th running of the Texas Relays (March 30-April 1).
MEET NOTES
• Fans will be able to watch both meets live, with Longhorn Network carrying the action at the Texas Relays, and FloTrack streaming live from the Stanford Invitational.
• At Stanford, the Rebels will run in both men's and women's editions of the 5K and 10K races. Each year the Stanford Invite ends up proving crucial for regional qualifying times. Last year alone it produced 73 times among the men's and women's 5K and 10K races that ranked within the top-48 of the East and West regions.
• At Texas, the Rebels will be among the best in the nation getting a feel for the site of the upcoming 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships due back in Austin on June 7-10. The No. 8 Ole Miss women will be among 13 squads ranked within the top-25, as well as 28 total among both men's and women's competition.
• All-time at the Texas Relays, Ole Miss has won eight total titles -- seven from the men and one from the Rebel women (Haley Cutright, 3000-meter steeplechase, 2013). Winners for the Rebel men are the 2014 distance medley relay, Ricky Robertson in the high jump in 2014, Olympian Sam Kendricks in the pole vault in both 2013 and 2014 (invite), Olympian Antwon Hicks in the 110-meter hurdles in 2003, and Olympian Savante' Stringfellow in the long jump in both 2000 and 2001.
• Ole Miss will see 15 individual outdoor debuts this weekend -- all distance runners -- as well as the outdoor debut of the men's 4x100-meter relay, the men's 4x800-meter relay, All-American senior McKenzie Long's 100-meter open, and Chase Rose's first 3000-meter steeplechase of the season.
• Ole Miss is coming off its first home meet of the season last week at the Ole Miss Classic, where the Rebels snagged 14 total event titles and received a U.S. and NCAA lead in the shot put from Jalani Davis in her outdoor opener.
• Davis was named the SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts. She set the U.S. and NCAA lead in the shot put for the outdoor season, winning at an outdoor PR of 17.91m/58-09.25 that currently ranks No. 5 worldwide and improves upon her slot at No. 3 in Ole Miss history. She also won the hammer at a debut of 67.82m/222-06, currently the No. 2 mark in the NCAA, No. 3 in the United States and No. 18 in the world this year.
• Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan won his fourth SEC Freshman of the Week award of the year and his first of the outdoor season after a strong open at the Ole Miss Classic. He won the hammer at a debut of 68.53m/224-10, the best throw by a freshman so far this season by nearly 12 feet, and followed that up with a win in the shot put at 18.63m/61-01.50, the best by a freshman shot putter currently by 2.5 feet.
• Ole Miss enters this week with 20 total times or marks within the NCAA top-50 -- 10 apiece by the men's and women's teams. Davis' NCAA No. 1 in the shot put leads for the Rebel women, while senior Ahmad Young Jr. holds the top spot for the men with his No. 4 time in the 110-meter hurdles at a PR of 13.69 (+3.9).
REBELS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
• Ole Miss debuted at a women's outdoor program record No. 8 in the first outdoor rating index released by the USTFCCCA this week. That tops the previous outdoor best by the Rebel women of No. 15 in Week Two of 2017, and it ties for the best in combined program history outdoors with a No. 8 slot by the Rebel men in Week Five of the 2012 season.
• This is Rebel women's 39th all-time appearance in the outdoor rating index, the 30th since 2016 under the supervision of eighth-year head coach Connie Price-Smith.
• Ole Miss currently owns 151.80 points in the Week One release, and is led by a powerful group of women's throwers that would rank as the No. 11 program nationally all by themselves (136.65 points). Just by herself in the shot put (38.51 points) and hammer (31.29 points), Jalani Davis would rank as the No. 36 team nationally at 69.8 points combined. Fellow All-American seniors Shey Taiwo (No. 3, 67.69m/222-01; 29.20 points) and Jasmine Mitchell (No. 7, 65.42m/214-08) give Ole Miss a fearsome hammer squad that would rank No. 27 nationally as a team by itself (80.43 points).
• The Rebel men, meanwhile, aren't far outside the top-25 in the Week One release, currently sitting in 34th nationally.
WOMEN'S NOTES
• All-American senior and reigning NCAA Indoor weight throw champion Jalani Davis opened her outdoor season off right where she left off after a historic indoor campaign. Davis' U.S. and NCAA lead in the shot put (17.91m/58-09.25) and her NCAA No. 2 mark in the hammer (67.82m/222-06) currently makes her the only thrower worldwide at 58 feet in the shot put and 222 feet in the hammer this season.
• Indoors, Davis became the first woman in world history to break 80 feet in the weight throw and 60 feet in the shot put, and she did so in the same meet at the SEC Indoor Championships. Combined, Davis is also the only thrower in world history at 80 feet in the weight throw (24.63m/80-09.75; 2023), 60 feet in the shot put in either season (18.43m/60-05.75; 2023 indoor), 228 feet in the hammer (69.53m/228-01; 2022) and 184 feet in the discus (56.23m/184-06; 2021).
• Fellow All-American and NCAA weight throw champion Shey Taiwo has had a consistent start to her final outdoor season, throwing beyond 67 meters in the hammer in each of her first two competitions of 2023. Taiwo, who missed the 2022 outdoor season due to injury and was granted an extra year in 2023, currently ranks No. 3 in the NCAA at 67.69m/222-01.
• Taiwo put together the most prolific weight throw season in NCAA history in 2022 en route to the national title, ending one centimeter shy of the collegiate record at 25.55m/83-10. The year before -- her last full outdoor season -- Taiwo was the NCAA runner-up in the hammer at 71.27m/233-10. That mark still ranks her as the No. 10 performer in collegiate history and the top returner for 2023.
• When combining the season-bests for Davis, Taiwo and Jasmine Mitchell (NCAA No. 7, 65.42m/214-07), the Rebel trio hold an average hammer distance of 66.98m/219-09. When combining their career bests, that number shoots up to 69.06m/226-07.
• Fellow senior thrower Tedreauna Britt is having the best all-around start of the group, notching PRs in all three of her events last week. Britt currently ranks No. 10 in the NCAA, No. 5 in the East Region and No. 2 in the SEC behind Davis at an overall PR of 16.57m/54-04.50 -- improving upon her slot as the No. 6 performer in school history outdoors.
• In the discus, Britt -- a two-time SEC medalist and 2021 champion in the event -- let one fly a career-best 54.94m/180-03 last week. That puts her No. 16 nationally, No. 12 regionally and No. 3 in the SEC this year.
• Senior hurdler Jaiden Paris has had an equally superb start to her outdoor season, leading the way for the Rebels in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 100-meter dash. Paris became the third-fastest in school history in the hurdles last week, winning at an Ole Miss best of 13.40 (+1.5) that currently puts her No. 17 in the NCAA, No. 14 in the East Region and No. 6 in the SEC. Paris also currently owns the top 100-meter time for the Rebels at 11.67, which won her another event title at last week's Ole Miss Classic.
• Notable debuts for the Rebel women this week include indoor All-American sprinter McKenzie Long in the 100-meter dash at Texas Relays, and the overall debut of the reigning SEC 10K silver medalist Skylar Boogerd at the Stanford Invitational. Long ran on Ole Miss' winning 4x100-meter relay last week, and is set to do so again this week in addition to opening in the 100-meter dash. This will be Boogerd's first 10K since last year's NCAA East Regional.
MEN'S NOTES
• Senior Ahmad Young Jr. currently holds the top ranking performance for the Rebel men at his career-best time in the 110-meter hurdles of 13.69 (+3.9) from last week. In the USTFCCCA index, that time is worth 25.76 points, and it also makes him the No. 5 performer in Ole Miss history. Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan owns a combined 22.71 points after his outdoor debuts in the hammer (17.31) and shot put (5.40).
• Robinson-O'Hagan opened his first outdoor season as a Rebel in strong fashion at the Ole Miss Classic last week, winning both the hammer and shot put while finishing runner-up in the discus. He won the hammer at a debut of 68.53m/224-10, the best throw by a freshman so far this season by nearly 12 feet that already makes him No. 2 in Ole Miss history and ranks No. 8 in the NCAA, No. 4 in the East Region and No. 2 in the SEC this year.
• He followed that up with a win in the shot put at 18.63m/61-01.50, moving him up to No. 3 in Ole Miss history outdoors. This year, it ranks No. 17 in the NCAA, No. 8 in the East Region, No. 3 in the SEC, and is the best by a freshman shot putter currently by 2.5 feet. He also moved up to No. 7 in school history with his runner-up performance in the discus at 52.48m/172-02.
• Notable debuts for the Rebel men this week include a trio of All-Americans running for the first time this outdoor season, as well as the first appearance of the men's 4x800-meter relay since a historic win at last year's Penn Relays.
• All-American senior Tiarnan Crorken, along with Marcus Dropik, will represent Ole Miss in the invitational section of the 800-meter at the Texas Relays. Crorken was a First-Team All-American in the 800-meter indoors in 2022 after finishing fifth place.
• Crorken also earned All-America honors on this year's NCAA runner-up distance medley relay squad, which was anchored by senior Anthony Camerieri, who opens his outdoor season in the 5K at Stanford this weekend.
• Returning NCAA qualifier Cole Bullock will run in his first 5K of the outdoor season out at Stanford. Bullock qualified for the outdoor national meet in the event last year, becoming one of just four Rebel men to ever do so.
