La Sasso and Samuels Win Respective Matches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 4 seed Ole Miss men's golf team faced off with No. 3 seed Arkansas in match play format for its final day at the Country Club of Birmingham but fell in extra holes to the Razorbacks, 3-2.

Through the front nine, Ole Miss fell behind Arkansas with three Rebels down to their competitors. However, that did not faze Ole Miss as it came back to force Arkansas to a 2-2 tie. For all or nothing, the match came down to Tom Fischer in extra holes to break a tie. Fischer was unable to maintain his momentum and fell to the Razorback.

Michael La Sasso was the first Rebel to put points on the board for Ole Miss, securing his match against Arkansas' John Daly 3&2. La Sasso played steady golf but struck first on Hole 6 to go 1-up. Daly tied the match on Hole 8, but the Rebel was quick to respond winning the following three holes to gain a 3-up lead. That's all it took for the NC State transfer to claim victory over his SEC competitor.

Patton Samuels teed off against Arkansas' Thomas Curry and earned a 2-up victory. The front nine proved to be a back-and-forth battle between the two as Samuels responded to every hole Curry won by claiming the following hole. At the turn, the Razorback had a 1-up lead, but Samuels turned up the momentum with back-to-back birdies on Holes 12 and 13 to take his first lead of the match. Samuels almost had the match won by going 2-up on Hole 16, but Curry didn't go down without a fight by winning Hole 17. Samuels didn't flinch and earned Ole Miss' second point on the board by going par on Hole 18.

Tom Fischer had a true battle on his hometown course, facing off against Arkansas' Jacob Skov Olesen. The Razorback struck first and hard, going 4-up on the first four holes of the day. Fischer didn't back down and capitalized on Skov Olesen's mistakes to bring the match to striking distance at the turn just 1-down. Fischer made a big-time birdie on Hole 16 to go all square in the match. Skov Olesen responded quickly on Hole 17, but Fischer made another huge birdie on Hole 18 to force the match to extra holes. The Birmingham, native, was unable to hold his momentum and fell in 19 holes.

Cameron Tankersley capitalized on the first hole of the day to go 1-up through the first five holes. Arkansas' Manuel Lozada took the match going 2-up and winning Holes 6-8. Tankersley tied the match back up by making birdies on Holes 10 and 12. However, Lozada went on to go 2-up against the Rebel and claim the match 2&1.

Tim Tillmanns fell to Arkansas' John Driscoll 5&4. Tillmanns fell early in the match to the Razorback and was unable to come back from a 5-down battle.

With the conclusion of match play, Ole Miss will head home from Birmingham with a 4th place finish in stroke play at 24-under. The Rebels will look towards their final tournament of the fall season by co-hosting the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 15-17) in Biloxi, Mississippi.
