Volleyball Drops Nailbiter to Oklahoma

11/8/2024 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Despite some historic hitting, the Ole Miss volleyball program dropped a heartbreaking, 3-2 loss to Oklahoma on Friday afternoon at the Gillom Athletic Performance Center.

Nia Washington once again led the Rebels (14-9, 4-7 SEC) attack with 26 kills and seven digs, while hitting .364. Shayla Meyer also shined, tallying 20 kills, while Sasha Ratliff matched a career-high with nine blocks in the loss to the Sooners (11-8, 5-6 SEC). Mokihana Tufono also added 53 assists in the defeat.

It's the first time that Ole Miss has had a match where one Rebel gets at least 25 kills and another gets 20 since Oct. 7, 2018 against LSU (Emily Stroup - 30 & Caitlin Wernentin - 21).

Right from the start, the Rebels came out swinging, building a 12-5 lead, with three kills apiece from Meyer and Washington. The offense continued to surge, hitting .480 over the set and keeping the Sooners at an arms-length. After Oklahoma cut the lead to 21-16, the Rebels rattled off four straight points with two Washington kills to win 25-16.

Things started strongly for the Rebels in the second set, as the hosts took an 11-8 advantage behind three more kills from Washington. However, the tide slowly began to turn in the Sooners favor, as they erased the advantage and would emerge with a lead. After batting to an 18-18 tie, the Sooners went on a 7-2 to run to end the set, as five errors doomed the Rebels who dropped the set 25-20.

Oklahoma would quickly build a 10-6 lead in the third set, with the Rebels playing defense for much of the frame. Meyer continued her hot start and kept it close, getting the Oklahoma lead down to 16-15. Nevertheless, four more Rebel errors stifled any comeback attempt, as the Sooners recovered to win the third set.

Needing a response, the Rebels fought valiantly to swing the momentum back in their favor. After an 8-6 start for Oklahoma, the Rebels seized on an Oklahoma service error to spring a 9-2 run, as Cammy Niesen sustained the run with strong serving, tallying two service aces. Now holding a 15-10 lead, the Rebels kept tacking on insurance points, as Meyer and Washington continued to pace the team. Some late errors by Oklahoma forced a fifth set, as the Rebels won 25-21.

In a decisive fifth set, the Rebels fell into an early 4-1 hole. Washington continued to put the team on her back, with four kills in the frame and the Rebels answered to retake an 8-7 lead. However, some improved defense by the Sooners proved to be timely, as they responded with 3-0 and 5-0 runs to pull away and take the fifth set, 15-10.

The Rebels continue their home swing next weekend, hosting Arkansas for a rematch on Friday, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
