Big Fifth Innings Propel Softball to Eighth Straight Victory

2/17/2024 | Softball

KENNESAW, Ga. – Late rallies against ETSU and Kennesaw State helped Ole Miss softball stretch its winning streak to eight on Saturday at Bailey Park.

The Rebels (8-1, 0-0 SEC) scored a combined 12 runs in the fifth inning on day two of the Kennesaw State Tournament. The one-two punch of Jalia Lassiter and Jaden Pone at the top of the order finished 8-for-14 over the two games, scoring six runs and driving in four more. Delaney Rummell also was key for Ole Miss in crunch time, going 4-for-6 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 5, ETSU 3
A fifth-inning rally helped Ole Miss come from behind and pick up a 5-3 win in its opening game of the day. Brianna Lopez earned her first victory as a Rebel, and Aynslie Furbush closed it out for the save. The top of the order got it done at the plate, led by Jaden Pone, who went 2-for-3, and Paige Smith, who knocked in the tying runs.

ETSU doubled with two outs and scratched a run across in the opening frame, taking advantage of an errant throw. The Rebels threatened in the bottom of the first after Lassiter worked a leadoff walk and stole second, but they couldn't drive home the tying run.

The Buccaneers added a two-run home run in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Ole Miss turned to Lopez in the circle, who sent the Rebel offense back to the plate.

Ryan Starr recorded the first Ole Miss hit of the morning with one away in the third. One batter later, Jaden Pone doubled just past a diving left fielder to drive in the Rebels' first run of the game.

Again in the fourth inning, ETSU gave Ole Miss fits. The Buccaneers loaded the bases with two outs, but Lopez came away with a clutch swinging strikeout to keep Ole Miss within striking distance.

With opportunities to score winding down, the Rebels rallied in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the game. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Paige Smith, who delivered a base hit to left to knot things up at 3-3. A brand new ballgame, all the momentum was on Ole Miss' side. ESTU began to struggle to locate the zone, leading to back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 5-3.

After taking the lead, Furbush took over in the circle, making her first appearance of the season. She induced an inning-ending double play in the sixth and stranded the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh to earn the save.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 14, Kennesaw State 5
Ole Miss once again used a big fifth inning to propel itself to victory over Kennesaw State, run-ruling the Owls 14-5 in six innings.

The Rebels grabbed a 3-0 lead right out of the gate. Pone and Smith started it off, hitting back-to-back singles. Then with two outs, Delaney Rummell poked a base hit through the right side to score the first run of the game, and Furbush followed with an RBI double to empty the bases.

Kennesaw State got one back in the bottom of the first, scoring on a one-out double down the line, but otherwise, Sparks settled in nicely. She cruised through the first three innings, striking out five batters and only allowing two hits.

In the fourth inning, a two-run home run by the Owls tied the game up at 3-3.

The Ole Miss bats got hot in the fifth inning as the Rebels batted around. After the first three batters in frame reached base, Rummell singled through the left side to score the go-ahead runs. Three straight singles from Furbush, Annie Orman and DeLeon made it 7-3, and Ma'Nia Womack drove in a run on a groundout.

With runners on the corners, Lassiter sliced a ball down the right field line past a diving defender and into the corner. The speedy sophomore sprinted around the bases with no hesitation, sliding in at home for the Rebels' first inside-the-park home run since 2021.

Kennesaw scratched two runs across in the bottom of the fifth to avoid the run rule, but the Rebels plated three in the sixth to clinch the victory 14-5.

The Rebels round out their weekend at the Kennesaw State Tournament with a game against Pitt on February 18 at 9:30 a.m. CT.
