Track & Field’s Jalani Davis Named USATF Athlete of the Week
2/29/2024 | Track and Field
INDIANAPOLIS – Ole Miss women's track & field All-American senior Jalani Davis has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week, as announced by the USATF on Thursday.
Davis earned the honor after a historic set of performances at the 2024 SEC Indoor Championships last week, where she became just the second woman in conference history to sweep the weight throw and shot put. Davis won the weight throw at her current World No. 3 and NCAA-leading PR of 25.09m/82-03.75, which moved her up to No. 3 all-time in collegiate history and No. 9 in world history.
In the shot put, Davis won on an indoor career-best of 18.61m/61-00.75 that was saved thanks to a spectacular feat of athleticism to stay in the ring and keep the throw legal. That toss moved her up to No. 12 in collegiate history (No. 8 all-time among American collegians), No. 2 in Ole Miss history, and this year it ranks sixth among all U.S. athletes and 13th worldwide.
Davis is the lone woman in world history to break 80 feet in the weight and 60 feet in the shot indoors, and she has now done so twice within the same meet at both the 2023 and 2024 SEC Indoor Championships.
Davis – who is also the reigning NCAA Indoor champion in the weight throw – will be doubling in both events for the 6th-ranked Rebel women at the upcoming 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships, which run March 7-9 in Boston.
