Women’s Basketball Falls at Home to Texas A&M

2/8/2024 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. –  Facing off against one of the SEC's best defenses, Ole Miss women's basketball could not surpass Texas A&M on Thursday from the SJB Pavilion in a 72-53 loss.

Despite a back-and-forth first half, Ole Miss (16-7, 6-4 SEC) struggled to find offensive momentum against Texas A&M (16-6, 4-5 SEC) even with Snudda Collins hitting a season-best four three's to move into top-five all-time in program history in career makes from beyond the arc. For the second game in a row, Madison Scott led the Rebels in scoring with 15 points. Collins added 14 points, off of shooting at a 50% clip from three.nWith a team-high 10 rebounds, Rita Igbokwe added two blocks to hit the 250 mark in her career.

Following the Aggies jumping on the board first, Ole Miss quickly ran off to a 7-0 run to snag its first lead of the game. Shortly after, A&M fired back with a 7-0 run of its own to tie at 13 all towards the end of the opening quarter. Makes at the charity stripe from Marquesha Davis provided Ole Miss with the narrow edge through one at 16-15.

To open the second quarter, the Rebel defense stayed competitive but the Aggies offense heated up scoring 11 points in the first half of the second quarter. Finding themselves down by eight, Kharyssa Richardson provided a jolt of energy off the bench for the Rebels to begin closing in on Texas A&M. Hitting her 165th career made three to move into top-five all-time at Ole Miss, Collins brought the game to one possession nearing the break. A three from the Aggies in the final minute as well as trips to the free throw line, found Ole Miss facing a six point deficit at 35-29 heading into halftime.

Prompted by the play from Scott, Ole Miss worked to erase the gap yet struggled to slow down the Texas A&M offense. A 14-0 run from the Aggies forced the Rebels to remain stagnant, while Texas A&M continued to drain triples and extend its advantage.

Although Ole Miss' outscored Texas A&M in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to come within striking distance as the Rebels ultimately fell to the Aggies, 72-53.

Ole Miss remains idle this weekend before a trip to Florida next Thursday (Feb. 15) for its second game against the Gators this season. Tip from The Swamp is slated for 5:00 p.m. CT, streaming on SEC Network +.
