Lexie Brady and Softball Walk-Off No. 17 Mississippi State, 10-9
3/10/2024 | Softball
The Rebels (16-7, 1-2 SEC) answered every punch the Bulldogs (19-4, 2-1 SEC) threw in the series finale. Ole Miss overcame a four-run deficit in the third inning as Annie Orman tied the game at six with a pinch-hit two-run bomb and later knotted things back at nine with a late rally in the sixth to stay alive. With the game on the line, Brady delivered the knockout blow, taking the second pitch of the inning to straightaway center field to upset in-state rival, No. 17 MSU.
All nine Rebels in the starting lineup reached base safely, including eight who recorded a hit. Jaden Pone, Jalia Lassiter and Aynslie Furbush finished with multi-hit games in the victory. In the circle, Brianna Lopez came in for the final 2.1 innings to pick up the victory to move to 2-0 on the year.
After Mississippi State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a three-run home run, Ole Miss responded with two runs. A single from Lassiter and two walks to Paige Smith and Jamie Mackay loaded the bases with two outs for Aynslie Furbush. The senior watched four straight balls as the Bulldog pitcher struggled to find the zone and walked in the first run of the game. Delaney Rummell followed with a grounder that was bobbled by the shortstop to score Smith and cut the deficit to one.
Mississippi State tacked on another run on a fielder's choice in the second and two more on a two-run shot in the third to increase its lead to 6-2.
Looking to close the gap again, Mackay led off the bottom of the third with a stand-up double and moved 60 feet closer to scoring on a base hit to right by Rummell. With runners on the corners and one away, Angelina DeLeon smacked a double in the gap, clearing the bases. Still threatening, head coach Jamie Trachsel brought in Annie Orman to pinch hit with an RBI opportunity. The Myrtle, Mississippi, native took the Bulldog pitcher deep, tying the game at six.
A brand-new ball game, the Rebels used the momentum to take their first lead of the series at 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth. Brady walked and moved to second on a tapper back to the pitcher before scoring on a base hit through the right side.
The Bulldogs still didn't go away quietly, scoring the tying run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth and striking for two more in the sixth to retake a 9-7 lead.
Unphased, Ole Miss once again battled back to tie the score. Smith led off the inning with an infield single, and Brady was hit by a pitch to put the first two runners on. Needing two runs, Mackay laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. The very next batter, Furbush, drove in a run with a single that ricocheted off the pitcher's glove. Rummell followed with a sacrifice fly to score the tying run and knot the score back up at 9-9.
Both teams threatened in the seventh inning, but neither were able to find the winning run. Mississippi State loaded the bases with two outs, but a lineout to Lassiter in centerfield got the Rebels out of a jam. Ole Miss moved Ryan Starr into scoring position following a leadoff walk, but a great defensive play by the Bulldogs' shortstop sent the game into extra innings.
Lopez worked around a single and a walk in the top of the eighth to keep MSU's offense at bay and give the Rebels a chance. Brady stepped to the plate in the bottom half of the inning and crushed the walk-off winner over the wall in centerfield for Ole Miss' first conference victory of the season.
The Rebels are back in action on Wednesday, March 13, for a midweek doubleheader at Nicholls State beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
