Softball Sweeps Midweek Doubleheader at Nicholls State

3/13/2024 | Softball

THIBODAUX, La. – Ole Miss softball started its Louisiana spring break with a midweek sweep over Nicholls State on Wednesday night at Swanner Field.

GAME ONE | Ole Miss 4, Nicholls State 1
A strong outing from Makenna Kliethermes and timely hitting helped Ole Miss secure its first win of the day, 4-1, over Nicholls State. Jalia Lassiter doubled and tripled in the victory, scoring a pair of runs. Aynslie Furbush and Lexie Brady did the heavy lifting, each driving in two.

Lassiter doubled in her first plate appearance of the game, setting Ole Miss up with a scoring opportunity right off the bat. With two outs, Brady sent a two-run blast into the parking lot to give the Rebels an early 2-0 lead.

The Rebel defense flashed the leather in the first inning. Jamie Mackay made a nice catch on the run in right field, and Angelina DeLeon snagged a line drive headed back up the middle for the third out of the inning. Kliethermes ran into some trouble in the second after a pair of walks to start the inning, but the senior battled back to strand a pair for the second consecutive inning and keep the Colonels off the board.

In the third, Lassiter tripled off the wall in center to start things off. Seeing what she did last time up, Nicholls State carefully pitched around Brady to put runners on the corners with two outs. This time, it was Furbush who did the damage. The senior sliced a double down the line to extend the lead to 4-0.

Kliethermes started to find her groove in the fourth inning, striking out five straight batters, including the side in the fifth. After retiring 11 in a row, the Colonels got their first baserunner since the third inning on a Rebel miscue. Nicholls State managed to turn that into an unearned run to spoil the shutout in the seventh, but Ole Miss still picked up the 4-1 victory.

GAME TWO | Ole Miss 9, Nicholls State 1
A five-run fourth inning was the difference in game two as the Rebels grabbed a commanding 9-1 win over the Colonels to sweep the doubleheader. Jaden Pone and Annie Orman each racked up three hits in the victory, leading the offense to 12 on the night. In the circle, Catelyn Riley went 7.0 strong innings for her second win of the season.

Nicholls State took the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double, getting to Riley early. The Colonels held on to the one-run advantage for three innings.

Trailing by one, it was only a matter of time until the Rebels broke things open. The offense went to work, scoring five runs on six hits in the frame, nearly batting around the order. Paige Smith started with a base hit, setting up Brady for her second home run of the night. The junior took the Nicholls State pitcher deep to center to give Ole Miss a 2-1 lead.

The Rebels didn't stop there. Furbush doubled, and three singles from Orman, Riley and Pone quickly made it a 5-1 game.

Ole Miss scored four in the top of the seventh, adding an exclamation point to the victory. Pone doubled and scored the very next play as Lassiter singled back up the middle. The Rebels proceeded to load the bases and tack on runs from Smith on an error and Rummell and Brady on a double from Orman.

Leading 9-1, Riley slammed the door, capping off the victory with her career-high eighth strikeout.

The Rebels continued their spring break road trip in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, March 16-18 at No. 2 LSU.
