Baseball Bounces Back With Saturday Victory to Even Series
3/2/2024 | Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss spotted Iowa a four-run lead at 5-1 through three innings, then proceeded to score 11 consecutive runs as the Rebels evened the series with a 12-5 victory before an announced 11,226 Saturday afternoon in Oxford.
Ole Miss (7-5) and Iowa (5-5) decide the three-game set at noon on Sunday.
Iowa got a run in the top of the first inning, but their lead was short lived as Andrew Fischer tied the contest with a home run over the right field bullpen and into the Ole Miss student seats.
After a scoreless second, the Hawkeyes put up a four spot in the top of the third off Rebel right-handed starter JT Quinn. The big moment for Iowa was a two-run homer to left with two outs by Andy Nelson that made the score 5-1 in favor of the visitors. Quinn was replaced by right-hander Mitch Murrell who prevented further damage.
Ole Miss got one run back in the bottom of the third. Jackson Ross singled and later scored from third on a Treyson Hughes fly out to center field.
The Rebels scored five runs over the next three innings to take a two-run lead after six. After Murrell kept the Hawkeyes where they were in the top of the fourth, Ole Miss made some things happen after two outs. Ethan Groff walked on four straight pitches, and Fischer homered again, this time over the wall in left center to cut the Iowa lead to 5-4.
Left-hander Austin Simmons replaced Murrell to start the fifth. After the two-sport Rebel made quick work of Hawkeye hitters, the bottom of the fifth was another productive one offensively for the Rebels. With the bases loaded, Brayden Randle was hit by a pitch to score a run, then Groff flew out to left field to get another run home. Ole Miss led 6-5 through five.
Iowa hitters went three up, three down in the sixth as Simmons had another solid frame. In the bottom of the sixth, Furniss got things started with a single. After Lege struck out, Hughes walked and Luke Hill fouled out. Campbell Smithwick got a base hit to score Furniss, and Ole Miss led 7-5 through six.
Neither team scored in the seventh. Then right-hander Josh Mallitz, who had entered for Simmons to start the seventh, gave up no runs in the top of the eighth.
The bottom of the eighth all but put this one away for Ole Miss, with five runs crossing the plate. After Lege was hit by a pitch, Hughes singled to left. After an out, Smithwick walked to load the bases. Two walks later for Randle and Groff, and both Lege and Hughes had scored. Fischer singled to the left field corner to score Randle and Smithwick. Ross flew out to right to score Groff. The Rebels led by seven runs, and the Hawkeyes had much work to do, and quickly.
But in the top of the ninth, right-hander Sam Tookoian closed it out for Ole Miss, facing four batters with a walk and a strikeout. And the game was a victory for the Rebels.
Fischer's two homers highlighted a massive offensive day for the sophomore transfer from Duke. He tallied three hits and a walk with five RBI and two runs scored in five plate appearances. Furniss, Hughes, and Smithwick had two hits each.
The Hawkeyes were led by third baseman Raider Tello, who was 3-for-4 with a walk, a RBI, and a run scored. First baseman Andy Nelson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Simmons got the win for the Rebels and is 2-0 this young season. Marcus Morgan (1-1), the Iowa starter and the first of seven hurlers for the Hawkeyes, got the loss.
