Softball Drops Doubleheader Against No. 5 Georgia
3/23/2024 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. – Facing a top-five opponent for the second straight weekend, Ole Miss softball dropped a doubleheader with No. 5 Georgia to start the series on Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 0, #5 Georgia 7
Ole Miss fell to fifth-ranked Georgia in game one of the doubleheader. The Rebels held an explosive Bulldog offense off the board for the first four innings, but could only keep their offense at bay for so long.
Brianna Lopez earned her first start of the season, going 5.1 innings. She managed to stifle the Georgia offense through four innings with the help of her defense, striking out six batters.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that the Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie. A walk and two singles turned into a 2-0 lead for Georgia. The Bulldogs extended their lead with three in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning.
Down to their final out, Aynslie Furbush broke up the Georgia no-hitter with a single to left, but the Rebels fell 7-0.
GAME TWO | Ole Miss 7, #5 Georgia 10
After the offense struggled in game one, the Rebels bounced back and battled with No. 5 Georgia in game two of the afternoon, forcing extras but were unable to outlast the Bulldogs in eight innings.
Ole Miss and Georgia combined for 17 runs on 28 hits in the back-and-forth affair. Five different Rebels recorded multi-hit games, but once again, Ole Miss couldn't hold off the Bulldog attack.
After stranding the bases loaded in the first inning, Georgia plated three runs in the top of the second, but Kliethermes minimized the damage and left the bases full.
The Rebels answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lexie Brady and Furbush smacked back-to-back solo home runs to lead things off and pull Ole Miss back within one run.
Georgia tacked on two more in the fourth inning to restore the three-run lead and continued to add to the score in the fifth and sixth innings, making it 7-2.
Just when it looked like the Bulldogs were going to run away with things, a pinch-hit double from Annie Orman sparked the offense. The Rebels came alive, scoring three runs on five hits in the frame. Paige Smith, Furbush and Jamie Mackay all drove in runs with base hits to chip away at the deficit.
In the bottom of the seventh, a walk and single put the tying runs aboard for Ole Miss. Paige Smith stepped to the plate with two outs and lined a bases-clearing double down the right field line to knot things up at seven and send the game into extra innings.
The Bulldogs came up with a rally of their own in the eighth, scratching across three runs to reach double digits and take a 10-7 lead and held the Rebels off the board in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory.
