Softball Falls to No. 5 Georgia in Pitchers’ Duel

3/24/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss softball was unable to fend off a late Bulldog rally, falling to No. 5 Georgia 4-1 in a pitchers' duel Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

The Rebels (20-11, 3-6 SEC) outhit a dangerous Bulldog lineup (27-4, 5-1 SEC) 6-5 but were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Jaden Pone and Delaney Rummell each tallied two hits in the contest.

Makenna Kliethermes and Brianna Lopez dueled in the circle for Ole Miss. The duo combined for 10 strikeouts while holding the Georgia offense to one run through 6.0 innings. It wasn't until the seventh that the Bulldogs used an error and two hits to scratch across the go-ahead runs.

Ole Miss struck first in the opening inning. Jalia Lassiter walked and raced around the bases to score as Pone laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. The speed and heads-up baserunning from Lassiter helped give the Rebels an early 1-0 lead.

Georgia, however, answered back in the top of the third. A single and three free passes helped the Dawgs tie the game at one on a bases-loaded walk before Kliethermes could paint the corner to escape.

After 3.1 strong innings from the Rebel starter, Ole Miss went to the bullpen and turned to Lopez for a change of pace. The lefty mixed it up and worked 2.2 clean innings, allowing only one base runner, which was erased by an inning-ending double play in the fifth.

A leadoff walk and bunt single put the Rebels in a tough spot to start the seventh inning. Another walk loaded the bases with no outs before Georgia took a 4-1 lead on a base hit and back-to-back RBI ground outs.

With a chance to answer in the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs quickly retired the side in order to complete the weekend sweep.

The Rebels' homestand continues next weekend when Ole Miss hosts No. 23 South Carolina March 29-31.
