Softball Falls to No. 22 South Carolina in Extras

3/29/2024 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Locked in a pitcher's duel, Ole Miss softball battled with No. 22 South Carolina into extra innings but fell 2-0 on Friday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Stingy defense and solid pitching kept The Rebels (20-12, 3-7 SEC) and Gamecocks (24-10, 1-6 SEC) tied at zero through eight innings. A late South Carolina rally in the ninth proved to be the difference as Ole Miss couldn't respond in the bottom half of the inning.

Catelyn Riley cruised through five innings, allowing only four hits before passing the ball off to Brianna Lopez. Angelina DeLeon and Ryan Starr locked down the middle of the infield, turning a pair of double plays. DeLeon also had a solid day at the plate, tallying two of the team's five hits.

After Ole Miss turned a double play to erase a leadoff single in the first inning, the offense went to work. Paige Smith lined a two-out double down the line for the only extra-base hit of the game, but the Rebels couldn't capitalize.

South Carolina threatened in the second with two runners on and two outs. A single through the right side looked like it could drive home the first run of the night, but Jamie Mackay thought otherwise. The Laguna Beach, California, native fired a strike from right field to throw out the Gamecock runner at the plate.

Both pitchers began to settle in and cruise through the fifth inning. Ole Miss made a change in the circle in the sixth after a leadoff single, but Lopez didn't skip a beat, taking the contest into extra innings.

The Gamecocks nearly rallied to get on the board in the eighth with two base hits, but Lopez recorded three swinging strikeouts in the frame to neutralize the threat. Ole Miss looked to capitalize on a free pass to start the bottom half of the inning, but South Carolina turned its fourth double play of the night to stall the Rebel offense.

A leadoff walk and two hits gave No. 22 South Carolina the first two runs of the game in the ninth, but Ole Miss was unable to answer in the home half.

The Rebels look to even the series with the Gamecocks on Saturday, March 30, at 3 p.m. CT.
