Bats Boost Baseball to Midweek Win Over Austin Peay
3/26/2024 | Baseball
The Rebels are now 18-8 on the season, while Austin Peay is 15-9. This one was an offensive outburst from the start.
When the first inning was over, the teams had combined for eight runs, and the score was 4-4. A leadoff home run by Clayton Gray off Rebel starter Kyler Carmack put APSU up 1-0. Before the top of the first was over, all nine batters had come to the plate, and the Governors led 4-0.
But Ole Miss answered in the bottom of the frame. After Luke Hill and Andrew Fischer singled, Jackson Ross got Hill home with another single. A Will Furniss fly out later got Fischer home to make it 4-2. Back-to-back Treyson Hughes and Eli Berch singles scored two more runs, and the Rebels had tied the game through one complete.
Both teams got a run each in the second. Once again Gray led things off for Austin Peay, this time with a triple and scored on a Lyle Miller-Green single to give the Govs a 5-4 edge. Mitch Murrell had entered the game for Carmack after Gray's triple. After Miller-Green's RBI single, Murrell then got two quick outs to end the inning.
Josh Howitt came on in relief of APSU starter Adam Walker to start the Rebel second. Two walks by Brayden Randle and Hill, then stolen bases to put them at second and third, were followed by a wild pitch from Howitt to score Randle. It was 5-5 after two.
After Murrell got through the third unscathed, the Rebel offense poured it on again with another four spot. Tre' Speer was on the mound for the Govs, the third arm used by APSU. Ethan Groff singled, followed by a Furniss walk. After Hughes singled to score Groff, Berch walked, then Shawn Scott replaced Speer. With one out, Hill flew out to score Furniss. Fischer then singled to score Berch and Hughes. The Rebels led 9-5 after three innings.
Ole Miss added a run in the fourth on a RBI single by Hughes which scored Lege who had reached on a walk. Another run in the sixth on a home run by Lege to lead off the inning gave Ole Miss a six-run lead, and it remained 11-5 until the Rebs scored once each in the seventh and eighth.
Hill tripled with two outs and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh. Trenton Lyons walked and later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, and Ole Miss led 13-5.
The Governors scored four runs in the ninth, but with one out, Ryne Rodriguez came in to close things out.
In the middle innings, the Rebels were able to keep the Governors from scoring for six consecutive innings. Austin Simmons (one inning), Sam Tookoian (two innings), and Mason Morris (two innings) combined to not only keep the Govs off the scoreboard but never really gave them any opportunities.
Hughes was 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Rebels. Hill and Fischer had two hits each.
Murrell (2-0) got the win, while Speer (0-1) got the loss.
